Background

PBS Kids Sprout Originals is an American television production company founded on September 26, 2005 by HiT Entertainment, Sesame Workshop, PBS and Comcast (the latter of which became the sole owner of the channel in 2013), timed with PBS Kids Sprout's launch. It served as the network's in-house production company, producing the network's original shows. In 2009, the channel's name was shortened to Sprout and the company became Sprout Originals. On September 9, 2017, Sprout rebranded as Universal Kids and Sprout Originals was rebranded as Universal Kids Originals, coinciding with a shift in its targeted audience (from preschoolers to school-aged kids).

1st Logo (September 26, 2005-August 24, 2009)

Visuals: Each variant has a green five petal flower that eventually reveals the PBS Kids Sprout logo. The word "sprout" is written in a font. All of this takes place on a blue background.

Trivia: This logo was designed by Primal Screen.

Variants:

  • "Flowers": The flower hits colored flowers, causing them to spin, before getting into the Sprout logo.
  • "Big and Little": The flower jumps out of a larger version of itself as they roll along with the little as the latter jumps to the Sprout logo.
  • "Fluttering": Colored flowers fly across the screen where one of them is green and fly to the Sprout logo.
  • "Hoops": Flowers play with hoops. One of them spins its hoop too fast, causing the Sprout logo to form. This time, the background is yellow.
  • "Mobile": A mobile with various PBS Kids characters, such as Ernie and Barney, is shown. After a few seconds, the PBS Kids Sprout logo forms.

Technique: Flash animation.

Audio: A happy playful tune.

Availability: It's seen on PBS Kids shows that aired on Sprout before 2009.

2nd Logo (August 24, 2009-July 12, 2014)

Visuals: There is a child's hand opening a pop-up book. When it opens, lots of pictures unfold, such as trees, bushes, flowers, and a multicolored bug. A big orange flower is seen with the 2009 Sprout logo, with the text "sprout" in blue with a green 5-pedal flower above "out". The text "Original" is also shown.

Trivia: It's presumed that this was intended to appear at the end of Astroblast! when it premiered, as the closing theme fades out - presumably intended to segue into this logo's theme - when it could've finished.

Variants:

  • An in-credit version exists without "Original" can be seen on Nina's Little Fables.
  • On uploads of Pajanimals to the Jim Henson's Family Hub YouTube channel, the logo cheaply freeze-frames at the end so that the full credits music can be played.

Technique: Live action combined with computer animation.

Audio: A remix of the Sprout theme, with kids saying the network's name.

Availability: Seen on several Sprout original series (including The Chica Show), most of which are no longer on TV. However, it may be preserved on Hulu and Amazon Prime prints of The Chica Show. It is intact on uploads of Pajanimals to the official Jim Henson's Family Hub YouTube channel.

3rd Logo (July 12, 2014-September 26, 2015)

Visuals: Each variant consists of a child and their parent standing against a grainy white background. The parent holds a decorated rectangle with text reading "original" and the child holds a bullhorn. The child then says "Sprout!", and the Sprout logo comes out of the bullhorn. The child and parent both say "Original!", then the parent positions the rectangle below the Sprout logo.

Variants: There are three versions of this logo:

  • One features a white boy wearing a striped shirt and jeans, and a father wearing a light blue polo shirt.
  • The second features a white girl wearing a pink shirt and purple pants and a mother wearing glasses, a navy teal shirt, and jeans.
  • The third variant features a black girl wearing a white, pink, and purple shirt and mint-colored pants, and a mother wearing a dark blue/purple blouse with a light-yellow undershirt.

Technique: Live-action footage, and 3D animation for the logo.

Audio: A shortened version of the previous logo's music, along with the dialogue of the kid and the parent.

Audio Variant: There are instrumental, dialogue-less versions of this logo.

Availability: This was first shown on episodes of Astroblast!, and then episodes of the 2015 revival of Clangers on Sprout. This can also be found on early episodes of Ruff-Ruff, Tweet and Dave, before being replaced with the next logo below a few months later.

4th Logo (September 26, 2015-September 9, 2017)

Visuals: On a turquoise background, the Sprout text morphs in green, purple, and blue, and the flower morphs in purple, orange, and green. Then, when the flower is green and the text is a darker blue than the background, the text "original series" in blue and green flicker in slowly like neon.

Technique: 2D animation, done by Oishii Creative.

Audio: A remix of the Sprout theme with an airy tune and dreamy synths.

Availability: It appeared on every single Sprout show by the company, plastering the previous logos. It appeared on Floogals, Dot, Astroblast!, Chloe's Closet, Ruff-Ruff, Tweet, and Dave, and others. It made its last appearance on The Ollie & Moon Show.
