Tom Snyder Productions

Background

Tom Snyder Productions was the production company of the titular animator and software developer, Tom Snyder. Founded on May 12, 1980 as Computer Learning Connection, it adopted the TSP name in 1983. Before establishing an animation division, it specialized in edutainment software and briefly video games. Around 1991, TSP formed an animation division. During the time period the division was under TSP, it was best known for Home Movies and Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, both of which utilized a new animation style called "Squigglevision". Torstar acquired TSP in 1996 before selling to Scholastic in late 2001. The animation division spun off from TSP in February of that year becoming Soup2Nuts. The Tom Snyder name became solely used for developing software for schools, namely FASTT Math, but like Soup2Nuts, was closed in 2015 amid a restructuring of Scholastic, with FASTT Math acquired by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Until 1992, Tom Snyder Productions didn't use an on-screen logo.

1st Logo (1992)

Visuals: On a light blue background, there is a blue box with white and black outlines featuring a compacted early version of the ship in space design seen in the 2nd, 4th and 5th logos. Additionally, yellow text reading "Tom Snyder Productions" and "Presents" are seen above and below the box respectively. Above the "Tom Snyder Productions" text is a series of white dots.

Technique: 2D computer graphics.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen only on the pilot of Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, known as The Biography of Mr. Katz.

2nd Logo (May 28, 1995-January 22, 2000, 2005-2010)

Visuals: On an aqua-green background with light shining in the middle, there is a crudely-drawn rectangle on the left side of the screen where a white ship is seen flying in space by some planets. The company name in white (in a font similar to that of Gill Sans) is inside a robin egg blue rectangle that overlaps the bottom of the rectangle.

Variant: On FASTT Math and Science Court, the drawing is smaller: next to it (excluding the rectangle), the text is either in white or blue. Also seen on educational content and books by the company.

Technique: 2D computer graphics.

Audio: An upbeat tune with a 5-note saxophone ditty and a 4-note chime/guitar ending. This is all backed by adrum beat. Composed by Meiro Stamm.

Audio Variants:

On FASTT Math, a faster 9-note saxophone with drums is used. Composed again by Meiro Stamm.
Otherwise, the closing theme of the show plays over it.

Availability: Seen on the first two seasons of Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, as well as some episodes of the final two seasons of Science Court. Although seasons 1 and 2 of the former show (along with the next two seasons) were released on DVD back in 2007, those releases are long out-of-print.

It also appeared on FASTT Math and on other educational content by the company.

3rd Logo (October 6, 1996-June 17, 1998)

Visuals: On a white background, there is the same drawing as before, except the background of the drawing is purple (albeit the rectangle is in the middle of the screen). Also, the planets are slightly different: this all looks a lot more poorly drawn. The drawing has a shadow behind as the company name in black script is below, all in Squigglevision.

Technique: 2D computer animation, animated in Autodesk Animator Pro.

Audio: A 5-note melody (played in muted trumpet) under a guitar/piano accompaniment; composed once more by Meiro Stamm. Like the last logo, the closing theme of the show may play over it.

Availability: Seen on the 3rd and 4th seasons of Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist and most episodes of Science Court.

4th Logo (June 17, 1998-February 12, 2002)

Visuals: Same as before, except the original drawing is restored, the shadow is removed and the text is foam green. Like the last logo, the entire logo is in Squigglevision.

Technique: 2D computer animation, animated in Autodesk Animator Pro.

Audio: Like the last 2 logos, the closing theme of the show plays over it.

Availability: Seen on the last two seasons of Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist.

5th Logo (April 26, 1999-October 7, 2001)

Visuals: On a medium red-violet background, there is a starry sky with a few planets visible (including Saturn). In the center is a sheet with a drawing of a sailboat on it. The company name in foam green wiggles below the sailboat.

Variant: On Squigglevision, the text "in production with Science Court LLC" is underneath the name. The logo is also still.

Technique: 2D computer animation, animated in Autodesk Animator Pro.

Audio: The guitar version of the ABC jingle is used. Like the last 3 logos, the closing theme of the show may play over it.

Audio Variant: On Squigglevision, silence.

Availability: Seen on The Dick & Paula Celebrity Special and the first season of Home Movies (during both runs on UPN and Adult Swim).

However, it has been plastered by the Soup2Nuts logo on post-2002 US prints of the latter show (including the Season 1 DVD); it did, however, remain intact on international prints.
It appeared on the HBO Max prints of the second episode of Home Movies ("I Do not Do Well in Parent-Teacher Conferences") and episodes 7 through 10 of said show, all of which use the international print (judging by the Fremantle Corporation logo that follows).
