Background

Scholastic Entertainment (formerly Scholastic Productions and Scholastic Media) is the media, television and film production unit of the American book publisher, Scholastic.

1st Logo (October 3, 1982-May 25, 1991)

Visuals: On a black background, a white chevron shape (which is actually a open book shape and a modified version of the Scholastic logo) is shown taking up the whole screen, before it eventually starts to zoom out to the top of the screen. On the book itself are the words "A SCHOLASTIC PRODUCTIONS PRESENTATION" (in a black tall font) in a stacked form, as well as sprocket holes along the edges to give the appearance of a filmstrip. Once the book stops zooming, the text on the book scrolls into the middle as the seamline fades into the middle, as well as the sprocket holes fading out. As this occurs, the word "Scholastic" fades in below, creating a modified version of the print logo at the time.

Variants:

  • On Voyagers!, the logo's first appearance, the logo is still on a white background, with the book retaining the sprocket holes and "Scholastic Productions" is seen below. Above it is ""in association with"
    • On the first season of Charles in Charge, the still variant is altered to have the right page colored red, and the text reads "Scholastic Productions and".

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: The closing theme of the show/TV special.

Availability: It's saved on programs from the time period, such as Voyagers!, Charles in Charge on its DVD prints, the 1988 Clifford the Big Red Dog direct-to-video series, and My Secret Identity. The Special Magic of Herself the Elf uses an in-credit notice.

2nd Logo (January 1, 1990-September 14, 2003)

Visuals: On a black background, a red rectangle falls down from the top left of the screen, while the Scholastic print logo, which is the white text "SCHOLASTIC" with a open book on the left (not unlike the previous logo, but drawn at a lower angle), starts sliding in from the bottom right. The text and rectangle merge together at the bottom left, as a shadow effect is seen behind the text and book. The final product resembles the way the Scholastic logo looks on book covers.

Variants:

  • On Goosebumps, the logo starts about a second in after fading to it.
  • An in-credit version in without the box and colored red appears on the Genesis game Scholastic's The Magic School Bus: Space Exploration Game.
  • Later on, a reanimated variant of the logo is used with faster animation, a wider logo, and a much bigger rectangle.

Technique: Sliding computer animation.

Audio: A light synth-piano theme (of which there are 2 versions: one that has a more mellower tone and ends with a low note, and one that has a cherry tone and ends with a high note), or the end theme of the show.

Audio Variant: On post-1996 Weston Woods releases, the logo starts out with a piano theme, which transitions into the Weston Woods theme and logo.

Availability:

  • It appears on Goosebumps on DVD and VHS, and the live-action Animorphs series on Netflix and occasionally on Qubo.
  • The version with the piano theme appeared on The Baby-Sitters Club, which was released on VHS by KidVision. It is also seen on post-1996 Weston Woods releases; these releases (mostly the VHS counterparts) still used this logo until 2003.

3rd Logo (The Magic School Bus custom variant) (September 10, 1994-December 6, 1997)

Visuals: On a blue background with colored stars all over, the Scholastic logo is seen at the bottom left corner of the screen. In the middle of the screen, there is The Magic School Bus logo, which consists of a circle with the titular Bus, shaped like a rocketship and with the main characters in their original book forms visible through the windows, protruding through. Above the bus, there is the text "The Magic" and "School Bus" below.

Later Variant: From the second season of the series onward, everything besides the Scholastic logo is zoomed in, and Liz pops out from behind the circle, smiling and waving.

Technique: Done on a cel sheet, with the later variant adding in traditional animation from Nelvana.

Audio: The closing theme of the show.

Audio Variant: When Fox Kids reran the show from 1998 to 2002, the titular Bus's beeping was heard. The network's split-screen credits followed afterwards.

Availability: Seen on The Magic School Bus, which is intact on DVD, VHS, and streaming prints. Although most reruns of the show have kept this logo intact, reruns on the now-defunct Qubo network cut this logo, along with the South Carolina ETV and Nelvana logos, and went straight to the network's split-screen credits.

4th Logo (1994-1999)

Visuals: Just the text portion of Scholastic logo on a background of starry speckles flying upwards. After a few seconds, the red strip flashes in behind the text.

Variant: There is a later version where the logo is already formed on the starry background, with bigger text on the logo. A copyright stamp can also be seen below it.

Technique: Computer effects.

Audio: A loud synth, Sci-Fi-esque whoosh, which sounds like a rocket flying. For the short version, none.

Availability: Seen on KidVision tapes of The Magic School Bus. The original variant appeared on earlier VHS releases of the show (identifiable with the titular Bus beeping near the end of the KidVision logo on a trailer for Magic School Bus tapes), while the short version appeared on later releases of the series (identifiable with the Magic School Bus trailer at the beginning of those tapes starting with the line "Here's your ride...there's your guide!").

5th Logo (August 18, 1995-October 16, 2015)

Visuals: The Scholastic logo appears in a different way depending on the movie.

Variants:

  • The Baby-Sitters Club (1995) and Goosebumps (2015)ː The Scholastic stripe is seen scrolling up in the credits, but it's transparent and the outlines and text are all white. On The Baby-Sitters Club, the stripe is somewhat bigger.
  • Tuck Everlastingː The Scholastic logo is black and white. It scrolls in the credits and stops in the center.
  • Stellalunaː Just the Scholastic logo on a black background.

Technique: Digital graphics.

Audio: The end theme of the movie or none.

Availability: Seen at the end of The Baby-Sitters Club (1995), Tuck Everlasting, Stellaluna, and Goosebumps (2015).

6th Logo (1997-September 21, 2003)

Visuals: On a black background, a glowing red ribbon emerges from the center of the screen and starts to twist around a bit. It then flips around to reveal the Scholastic logo as it quickly contorts itself into a straight line and the glow dies down. The logo is also very small.

Variants:

  • On television shows, the logo is presented in a normal resolution, the ribbon curves more naturally and doesn't have a glow, and "SCHOLASTIC" is in a different font. The logo is also much faster most of the time.
  • On Clifford the Big Red Dog DVD releases, a URL reading "www.scholastic.com/clifford" is seen on some episodes. Other episodes have either have it share room with the PBS logo variant from the same show, the Clifford logo or a copyright screen.
  • On 2000-2002 PBS Kids airings of Season 1 and early Season 2 Clifford episodes, the logo cuts to a black screen and the PBS Kids funding plug fades in. On all future airings, the logo cuts to the funding plug except on later Season 2 episodes.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A tambourine is heard, followed by more drums coming in. It ends with a horn fanfare.

Audio Variant: The TV variant has either none or the end theme of the show. Some Clifford the Big Red Dog VHS releases, however, use the 2nd logo's theme.

Availability:

  • It was first seen on PC games, such as Clifford's Thinking Adventures and Clifford Reading, and all I Spy PC games up to I Spy Treasure Hunt.
  • The television variant was preserved on reruns of Clifford the Big Red Dog on PBS Kids and other PBS stations up until its removal in 2022. Also seen on the 2002 I Spy TV series, which last aired on the now-defunct Qubo network. It is still intact on VHS, DVD, and streaming prints of both shows.

7th Logo (September 1, 2003-)

Visuals: On a blood red background with a black vignette, the Scholastic logo wipes in briefly as a transparent shadow while zooming in and projecting a orange trail of rays. As the rays pass the screen, a giant version of the logo briefly appears and rotates extremely close to the camera, and the main logo starts to fade back in before the rays sweep back up, and the logo turns opaque by a lens flare running across it. The logo starts to zoom in again as the rays fade out, followed by the background, and finally the logo.

Variants:

  • The logo was originally produced in 16:9 widescreen, however both open matte and cropped versions exist.
  • A warp-speed version was used on Clifford's Puppy Days and Maya & Miguel.
  • A still version of the logo exists on CBeebies UK airings of Clifford's Puppy Days.
  • An alternate version exists where the logo has different angles and more shining effect.
  • In 2011, the logo was recreated in HD and with a smoother framerate. This version is only used for current Weston Woods releases.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: An uplifting string-pizzcato fanfare with a cymbal hit.

Audio Variants:

  • On Weston Woods releases, the same piano tune from the WW variant of the 2nd logo is heard, which once again transitions into the Weston Woods theme and logo.
  • A choir theme is heard on video games as well as Clifford's Really Big Movie.
  • The still version has the show's closing theme play over it.
  • On some shows, it's the closing theme of the show.
  • In other cases, none.

Availability:

  • Appeared on Clifford's Puppy Days and Maya & Miguel on PBS, Astroblast on Sprout (now Universal Kids), and the TV movie You’re Bacon Me Crazy on Hallmark Channel.
  • It can also be seen on international prints of WordGirl, but PBS Kids airings don't feature this logo.
  • This logo is also seen on Scholastic's YouTube channel.
  • The version with the music can be seen on software produced by Scholastic (such as Nickelodeon: Toon Twister 3-D and others).
  • Weston Woods releases as well as its HBO Max (now rebranded as just Max) prints still use this logo as of now.

8th Logo (October 3, 2008-May 4, 2011)

Visuals: Just the Scholastic logo fading in on a white background, without the wordmark at first. It then flips in letter-by-letter.

Variant: On Sammy's Story Shop, a copyright notice is seen on the bottom.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: The ending theme of the show. Sometimes, there's the sound of kids laughing and a kid saying "Reading. It's a way of life." or "Reading. Everybody's doing it!"

Availability: Seen on Sammy's Story Shop and Turbo Dogs. The music version appears on some commercials for Scholastic, which aired in 2008 in-between programs on Qubo.

9th Logo (2013; December 6, 2019-)

Visuals: A white book zooms out on a red background, briefly pausing in the center as it tilts and flips through its pages. The book then zooms out to the left as the rest of the Scholastic logo wipes in from the left, albeit with a white rectangle outline around it. The book stops flipping through its pages briefly, before flying off to the left and zooming to fill the screen with white.

Variant: On Stillwater, the logo starts with the Scholastic logo on a white background. Then, the rest of the logo plays, only sped up.

Technique: Computer animation by then-Scholastic subsidiary Soup2Nuts.

Audio: A re-orchestrated version of the 7th logo's theme. On Stillwater, the logo is silent.

Audio variant: During its first appearance from the Soup2Nuts commercial reel, it is the sound of the pages flipping.

Availability: First seen within a 2013 Soup2Nuts commercial reel, later seen on the rebooted Clifford the Big Red Dog series on Amazon Prime and PBS Kids, and Stillwater on Apple TV+.

10th Logo (November 10, 2021-)

Visuals: On a red background, the white book from the Scholastic logo is shown with shading, but closed. It opens on its own, and then stars fly from the book as it zooms out to reveal the rectangle on a black background. The text "SCHOLASTIC" fades in while the logo zooms out, and when the logo stops zooming, the book flashes. A shimmer of light moves across the rest of the logo, and then the word "ENTERTAINMENT", in the same font as the Scholastic logo, turns into view (like something sticking to the wall, and then swinging off).

Variants:

  • A short version has the logo start with the book flashing.
    • On Goosebumps, this variant plays in warp speed.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A peaceful acoustic tune with kids laughing. Then, a 16-note (basically 4 of the same notes played 4 times) descending piano tune, and then a funky F chord plays at the end below, similar to "Maybe" by Andrea McArdle. Sometimes, the closing theme plays it over or silence.

Availability: The full version was only seen at the end of Clifford the Big Red Dog (2021). The short version can be seen on Eva the Owlet and Goosebumps (2023).
