Sirius Thinking Ltd.

Background

Sirius Thinking, Ltd. is the production company of businessman John Sculley, Sesame Street head writer Norman Stiles, Sesame Street songwriter Christopher Cerf, and Muppet designer Michael K. Frith, founded in 1996.

Logo (April 3, 2000-November 22, 2010)

Visuals: On a yellow background with bright yellow lines is a crudely drawn dog with a star on his right eye. Then his tongue pops out that causes a rude look on his face and a thought bubble appears above, meaning that he's thinking really hard. The words "Sirius (Thinking) (the parenthesis are drawn as part of the thought bubble) Ltd." fade into the thought bubble. Then the dog returns to normal and smiles, as "For Jon, Jim, Joe, Jeff, Jeanne... and Ted" appears below the dog and thought bubble with text.

Trivia:

  • The company is likely named after the brightest star in the night sky of the same name. Said star is also inside the Canis Major (Greater Dog) constellation, hence why the dog has a star on its eye.
  • The names shown below the dog (Jon, Jim, Joe, Jeff, Jeanne, Ted) refer to Jon Stone (longtime director and writer for Sesame Street), Jim Henson, Joe Raposo (songwriter and composer for Sesame Street), Jeff Moss (longtime writer for Sesame Street), Jeanne Chall (an educational adviser on Between the Lions), and Theodor Geisel (the children's author better known as Dr. Seuss).[1]

Variants:

  • On seasons 6-8 of Between the Lions, the logo is shortened.
  • On seasons 9 and 10 of Between the Lions, the dog is drawn even more crudely (with added text below saying "© SIRIUS THINKING"), the background has no lines, and the "For Jon, Jim, Joe, Jeff, Jeanne... and Ted" tagline is already in its place. After a moment, the thought bubble appears with the text "Sirius" on the inside and "Ltd." mostly on the outside. After another moment, the "(thinking)" text (separated from the cloud) appears as well. Finally, the inside of the star around the dog's eye becomes yellow.
  • An in-credit version exists where the logo is next to the WGBH logo.

Technique: 2D animation. Limited animation for the later variant.

Audio: A rude noise made by the dog when he sticks out his tongue accompanied by a dreamy synth arpeggio, then a cackle from the dog. This is sometimes combined with the Between the Lions closing theme.

Audio Variant: From 2006 to 2010, the dog says "Whee!" instead, along with a quiet-sounding cackle. The original audio variant, however, was used again on Lomax, the Hound of Music.

Availability: Seen on Between the Lions and Lomax, the Hound of Music. It is preserved on VHS, DVD and streaming prints of the former show.
