Background

Sony Pictures Classics was formed in 1992 by Michael Barker, Tom Bernard and Marcie Bloom (the same founders who started United Artists Classics in 1981 and Orion Classics in 1983) by Sony Pictures Entertainment to produce and distribute independent, artistic, foreign and alternative film releases.

Logo (September 25, 1992-)


Visuals: On a blue background is a thin line near the top of the screen. Below the line are the words "SONY PICTURES CLASSICS".

Variants:

  • On some films, the background is black.
  • In its early days, the font of the text is somewhat different, and smaller.
  • Later films have a darker blue background and with the text stretched.

Technique: A still graphic.

Audio: None.

Audio Variant: On Black Book, at least on Tubi's print, the 2003 ContentFilm logo's music can be heard.

Availability:

  • Appears on Sony Pictures Classics releases such as Capote, Run Lola Run and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
  • This logo is plastered by the 1984 Warner Bros. Pictures logo on the trailer on the 2003 Warner Home Video DVD of Waiting for Guffman, however it appears on the 1997 VHS of the film itself by Warner Home Video.
    • Later prints of said movie have this omitted due to Warner Bros. Pictures owning all rights to the post-1993 Castle Rock Entertainment library.
  • This plasters the Shochiku logo on American prints of Brother (2000).
  • This also plasters the Columbia Pictures and The Star Overseas Ltd. logos on American prints, as well as Netflix prints of Kung Fu Hustle.
