Bad Robot Pictures

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

Background

This is the film arm of Bad Robot Productions, owned by J.J. Abrams. Their first movie was Joy Ride, released in 2001, however they did not use a proper movie logo until 2008.

1st Logo (January 18, 2008-December 16, 2011)

Visuals: This is like the TV version, but redone. In a box with a tall field of grass against a foggy sky, all on a black background, the screen zooms through the field. Suddenly, a silhouette runs across the screen. The robot, now done in CGI, appears in front of us from the left side of the box with its body obscured by grass. The picture turns into a drawing and "BAD ROBOT" in the same font as the TV logo, fades in under the box.

Variants:

  • On Cloverfield, the logo is considerably brighter.
  • Starting with Morning Glory, the fog is replaced by an evening sky with more realistic-looking clouds, and the robot looks smoother.
    • On the aforementioned film, the box stays over the opening scene after the logo fades out; it slowly zooms in to fit the screen as the scene progresses.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: The opening theme of the movie or silence.

Availability: Seen on Cloverfield, Morning Glory, Star Trek, Super 8, and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

2nd Logo (May 16, 2013-)

Visuals: A remastered version of the 2010 logo. There is the camera moving through some tall grass to reveal a more detailed field and sky (however it takes up the whole frame instead of being boxed in). The robot makes its entrance and the picture zooms out against a black background. The end result is similar to before except when the picture turns into a drawing, the robot blinks. Also, the fog in the drawing animates, unlike the previous logo.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Same as the first logo. On J.J. Abrams' two Star Wars films and Infinitely Polar Bear, some atmospheric noises are heard (grass rustling, wind blowing, birds chirping, etc.), followed by a popping noise when the robot appears on screen and at the end, the two kids saying the company name as in its television counterpart.

Availability: Seen on Star Trek Into Darkness, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, Infinitely Polar Bear, Star Wars: The Force Awakens (after the credits), 10 Cloverfield Lane, Star Trek Beyond, Mission: Impossible - Fallout and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (also after the credits).
