Background

Nintendo Pictures is the current film division of Nintendo. Its first, and so far, only film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, co-produced with Universal Pictures, was released on April 5, 2023 (originally planned for April 7, 2023, and December 21, 2022).

1st Logo (November 29, 2022-)

Visuals: A modified Super Mario Bros. question block sprite, along with the ground tiles, fade in over a black background. An 8-bit Mario sprite runs up to it (which is a modern colored version that is similar to the Super Mario Maker games), which skids and then sees an 8-bit Luigi sprite running up as well. Mario then jumps up to the question block, causing him to collect a few coins. As Mario comes back down, he and Luigi face each other back on the ground. Then, Luigi walks up, and the Bros. both jump and hit the question block at the same time. This causes the background to turn red, and the Nintendo logo in white, with a drop shadow, to pop out. The other sprites disappear except for the Bros.; they both wave out their hats and run off-screen.

Alternate Descriptive Video Transcription: In 8-bit animation, Mario runs down a platform and punches a question block. Luigi joins him and they punch the block together. The block background turns red and white. Letters read "Nintendo". Mario and Luigi run out of view.

Variants:

  • For trailers and TV spots, only a still frame of the end product is seen, which is the same as the Nintendo logo which is used at the end of Nintendo broadcasts and advertisements since 2016.
  • On 3D prints of the film, the Nintendo logo slightly zooms in.
  • In an ad for the film, the logo is paired with the Illumination logo.

Technique: 2D sprite-based computer animation.

Audio: The sequence starts with the familiar Super Mario Bros. overworld theme, from the original Famicom / NES game of the same name, composed by Koji Kondo, accompanied with sound effects from said game. At the transition, the level clear jingle plays.

Audio Variant: For trailers and TV spots, we just hear the score over the logo.

Availability:

  • The logo made its debut in the second trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie on November 29, 2022.
  • It also later appeared in the film's final trailer on March 9, 2023.
  • The full animated version officially debuted on said film.
  • This logo also does not appear on the first trailer, as there were no on-screen logos shown at all.

2nd Logo (February 18-March 10, 2023)

Visuals: There is the Nintendo and Illumination logos, both colored metallic gray, 3D and stacked on each other on a black background. Between them is an NES D-pad, meant to act as a collaboration sign between the two logos. The entire logo slowly zooms towards the camera.

Variant: Sometimes, the logo is zoomed out.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Just the ad's music.

Audio Variant: In some ads that use this logo, a retro-like sound is played.

Availability: It debuted on a Canadian ad for The Super Mario Bros. Movie from February 18, and later on a Hispanic Instagram ad of said film on March 10. The film itself uses the previous logo.
