Background

Upstarts was a British company founded in 1988 in Ipswich UK by Tom White. The company produced various board games, original and licensed, as well as action games, novelty items and creative products. The company released a series of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? board games which became the biggest-selling brand in the toy industry in 2000 and was awarded game of the year in both 1999 and 2000.

In 2005, the company expanded to distributing DVD games of game shows, but this eventually led to the company entering administration in April 2007 due to cashflow problems arising from an overstock of DVD games for Christmas 2006. The company's assets were acquired by University Games in June 2007.
