Background

Relic Entertainment is a Canadian strategy game developer founded in Vancouver in 1997, famous for their successful Warhammer 40,000 series (based off Games Workshop's tabletop wargame of the same name). Relic was bought by THQ on April 27, 2004 and sold to Sega on January 22, 2013 following THQ's bankruptcy.

1st Logo (September 28, 1999-March 11, 2010)

Visuals: The camera rises up by a chain holding an ancient underwater mine. The Relic banner (a yellow revolver-styled "r" in a black rectangle, next to "relic ENTERTAINMENT" in a yellow rectangle) is placed on a metal plate on its side. The camera then zooms out to show the mine itself floating in the deep. It then fades to the banner on a black background.

Variants:

  • On the demo version of Homeworld, only the still banner appears.
  • In 2003, the logo was redone with more details. The water also looks greenish, and the logo fades out after the zoom-out.
  • In 2006, the animation was slightly altered; it misses the first few seconds, is sped-up and overall looks more similar to the original version.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A somber underwater soundtrack with radio signal cracks at the end.

Audio Variant: The 2006 version has a shorter underwater soundtrack with different sound effects.

Availability: The original version is only seen on Homeworld. The 2003 version appears on Impossible Creatures, Homeworld 2 and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, while the later variant is seen on Company of Heroes and Dawn of War II (along with its expansion, Chaos Rising).

2nd Logo (September 6, 2011-)

Visuals: The Relic banner appears over hot rocks, emitting fire sparks as the camera pans over. It then lights up and the logo fades out.

Variant: On Dawn of War III, the logo floats in front of the Sun.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Fire and blasting sounds.

Availability: Seen on Warhammer 40.000: Space Marine, Company of Heroes 2 and Dawn of War III.
