Background

NovaLogic Inc. was a software developer and publisher established in August 1985 and based in Calabasas, California. Founded by John A. Garcia of Datasoft, the company was best known for their Voxel Space engine, which was utilized in their franchises such as the Comanche and Delta Force series.

In October 2016, Austrian game developer and publisher THQ Nordic acquired all of NovaLogic's assets, while buying out Electronic Arts' minority stake. The company was laid dormant afterwards, although THQ Nordic revived the Comanche name for a new game in the franchise, with an early access release in 2020.



1st Logo (1992-June 28, 1996)

Visuals: On a black background is a rectangle with an orange gradient that darkens towards the middle. Two impressions (one full on top, one half on bottom) are seen on it, along with the conjoined letters "NL" with a different orange gradient overlapping the rectangle. The words "NOVA" and "LOGIC" are seen above and below, with a trademark symbol in the bottom right corner and a copyright notice on the bottom of the screen.

Variants:

  • On Armored Fist, the gradient is tamer and the text is more pixelated.
  • An animated version exists: a 3D box render of the logo rotates together in two pieces while flying towards the screen, and after it centers, the text stretches in around the logo.
  • Another animated version, only seen on Black Fire for the Saturn, has the individual pages of the box fold in and out while panning to the left. When it centers, the words "A" and "PRODUCTION" fade in with the usual text stretching in.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A warbling synth trumpet theme.

Audio Variants:

  • On Armored Fist, it's the opening sounds of the game.
  • On Black Fire, it's silent.

Availability: Seen on Comanche: Maximum Overkill, Armored Fist, Werewolf vs. Comanche and Comanche 2. It also appeared on Black Fire for the Sega Saturn.

2nd Logo (September 25, 1996-April 22, 1998)


Visuals: The camera pans off a gray stone box on a concrete floor. As it gets further, the texture from the previous logo is revealed on it, albeit rustier and with the "NL" in gray. After the box centers, the floor fades out and the company name fades in, followed by the trademark symbol and the copyright notice, which fades out before the logo does.

Variant: On Armored Fist 2, the floor is a deserted terrain and the orange on the box is more saturated.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Either a low synth drone with a high string section, or a darker synth drone followed by a tense string section and a whirr-like note. On PAL releases, the themes are high-pitched.

Availability: Seen on F-22 Lightning II, F-22 Raptor, Comanche 3, Armored Fist 2 and Comanche Gold.

3rd Logo (September 18, 1998-February 12, 1999)


Visuals: The scene consists of numerous shots of a dark room with blue-white light shining through holes, which begin to close as the logo seems to be formed. At the end, the complete logo is seen embossed on the wall which fades out, leaving the logo to turn purple and the text to turn white.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: At first, a didgeridoo riff is heard, followed with cog and machine sounds. Halfway through, a tense tune begins to rise, ending in a hit and sparkles.

Availability: Seen on Delta Force, MiG-29 Fulcrum and F-16 Multirole Fighter.
