Background

Black Rock Studio was a Brighton-based video game studio, originally founded in 1998 by Tony Beckwith as "Pixel Planet" and acquired by the Climax Group a year later. It was purchased by Buena Vista Games (later Disney Interactive Studios) in September 2006 while the studio was named "Climax Racing". Under its new name, it produced two games, PURE and Split/Second, but then went through layoffs in early 2011 despite the games selling well. Their planned sequels were cancelled as well, and the studio was announced to be fully closed by Disney on June 30, 2011.
