Background
WNBC is one of the O&O's (owned and operated network) of the NBC television network and is also the flagship station of NBC. It is known for being the first TV station in America, first signing on at 1:30 pm on July 1, 1941, which was one full hour before WCBW (now WCBS).
WNBC's history traces back to the experimental station W2XBS, founded in 1928 by RCA, just two years after NBC was established as a radio network. It was originally a test bed for the RCA Photophone theater TV system, which was experimental at the time. This station does have a few firsts. These include, the first televised Broadway drama (June 1938), the first live news event covered by a mobile unit (November 1938), and the first of 3 sports (baseball & football in 1939, hockey in 1940).
1st Logo (1992-1995)
Visuals: A large 4 with the 1986 NBC peacock is shown, Then the "New York" script draws.
Trivia: This is based directly based on the station's ad campaign from August 1, 1992 to September 5, 1995.
Variants:
- There are different versions of the IDs are exist during that period, including the shots of New York City and even Rockefeller Plaza (which is also the headquarters of the NBC network and WNBC).
- A live version is also exist, the 4 and the NBC peacock logo and the text reads:
along with the time and temperature is shown.
- A still version of the logo is also exist, the logo appears along with 1993-95 news graphics serves as a wallpaper. This is also used for technical difficulties at the station.
- The 1992-93 news opens had the variant begins with the 4 zooms out, then the NBC peacock logo slides to the right and the text "WNBC NEW YORK" slides on the bottom. When the logo completes, it segueing to the News 4 New York logo.
- The 1993-95 news opens had also used the variant, with the 4, the NBC peacock logo and the "WNBC" text appears, with the text later transforms to the "New York" script, before the introduction of anchors and the News 4 logo appears at the end.
- There is a special Mother's Day variant of the IDs are exists, used in 1993, 1994 and 1995, with the red roses on the background, the card reads "Happy Mother's Day" and they flips to the talent and their moms (in static picture) and the "4 New York" logo (in the blue background).
- A special 4th of July variant is exist, used in 1993, 1994 and 1995, with the cartoon versions of the Statue of Liberty and the "4 New York" logo and the colorful fireworks appeared in the background.
- The public service announcement variant is rarely exist, with the "4 New York" logo is animated and is superimposed, along with the "WNBC" text and the NBC peacock logo appears in an wallpaper. The "4 New York" logo animation may appeared on the left or right bottom corner.
- A special presentation variation is rarely exist, with the "4 New York" logo is animated and it has including the Twin Towers appearing in the background, but there is no "SPECIAL PRESENTATION" wordings next to the logo.

Audio Variants:
- The still variant had included the voiceover (voiced by Fred Facey) saying "Your watching channel 4, WNBC, New York".
- The news opens from 1992-93 used the four-note signature tune (from the "We're 4 New York" news music package) followed by Scott Chaplin saying "This is WNBC, "4 New York"", then the NBC chimes appeared (and occasionally, Scott Chaplin saying "And now... "News 4 New York") once the News 4 New York logo appears.
- The 1993-95 news opens had the opening theme played with either Danny Dark or Les Marshak saying "Your watching WNBC, 4 New York. and now..., [ANCHOR NAMES], This is "News 4 New York at [TIME].""
- The 4th of July variant had the instrumental version of the "We're 4 New York" jingle and the voiceover (voiced by Danny Dark) saying "From all of us at "4 New York"... Have a happy 4th of July holiday".
- The Mother's Day variant had the instrumental version of the "We're 4 New York" jingle and any of the talent saying "Happy Mother's Day".
- The special presentation variant had the theme (from the "We're 4 New York" news music package) and the voiceover (voiced by Scott Chaplin) saying "The Following is a "4 New York" Special Presentation".
- The ending of the PSA for the Public Service Announcement variant.
Availability: It can been seen as an ID during its period. The still variant was occasionally used if the station goes on a technical issue and it is also appears as a surprise appearance during game 6 of the 1994 NBA Eastern Conference Finals on June 3, 1994. The news open variant is seen only on all News 4 New York newscasts during the period. The July 4th variant is used only in 1993, 1994 and 1995. The Mother's Day variant is used only in 1993, 1994 and 1995. The PSA variant is seen on the PSAs broadcast on the station during that period.

Visuals: Same as the 2006 news open, but instead they used the 2008 modification of the 2007 "4 New York" logo this time without the "HD" mark. the byline "WNBC WNBC-DT NEW YORK" appears next to the logo.

Audio: The abridged version of the 2003 news theme (created by Rampage Music) and the voiceover (voiced by Tom Spackman) says "You're watching NBC 4 New York, This is "News 4 New York"".
Availability: Seen only on News 4 New York newscasts during that period. The voiceover line "You're watching NBC 4 New York" was later purposed for the legal IDs starting in 2014.
6th ID (November 17, 2008-February 2010; newscasts only)
Visuals: On a gold background, the towns and boroughs appeared one by one, but the sparkles appears, the 2008 "4 New York" logo with "NEW YORK" now written in all caps and the byline "WNBC WNBC-DT NEW YORK" zooms out on screen.
Variant: Starting on June 12, 2009, the "WNBC-DT" wordings on the byline is officially removed.

Visuals: Depends on the variant, any of the WNBC or NBC News talent saying "We're 4 New York" or "I'm 4 New York" but these usually feature a 2008 WNBC logo in the style of the variant, which can be seen below.
Trivia: This is based directly on the station's ad campaign called "4 New York is Always On", a continuation to the very popular "We're 4 New York" ad campaign in 2008-2009, after the station changes its current logo on November 17, 2008.

Visuals: the New York City skyline in the background and the text reads:
in the Media Gothic font appears, along with the 2008 "4 New York" logo animation from the station's Look F graphics zooms out.
Trivia: the graphics used for this ID was seen in the station's news promos in 2015-16, while the voiceover line which been homage to the 2002 modification of the 1995-2003 news opens, the 2003-06 news opens and the 2008 news opens.
Technique: Live-action footage and green screened 2D computer animation.
Audio: The low pitch version of "LA Groove" theme (which is used in the newscasts) and the voiceover (voiced by John Pleisse) saying "You're Watching NBC 4 New York".
Availability: Seen as a ID during occasional time periods during that period.
11th ID (June 11, 2016-July 5, 2021)
Visuals: The swipe from the station's "Look N" graphics appears and the CGI version of the 2008-present "4 New York" logo appears in the New York City skyline is shown, but with the text from the previous logo is now in the FF Din font.

- On the non-AM newscasts, known as News 4 New York, the "NEWS AT [TIME]" was later added to the logo and the "WNBC New York" was moved to the bottom, but smaller.
- On Today in New York, the "TODAY in NY" logo was in placed of the "4 New York" logo from 2012-17 and from 2017-2021, the alternate version of the logo is exist, with the NBC peacock logo instead of the sun from The Today Show logo and the words "TODAY In New York" appears.
Audio: The "LA Groove" theme now in a normal pitch, and the voiceover from the previous logo remained the same.
Audio Variants: On the newscasts, the 4-note sounder is heard. The 4-note signature for NBC 4 New York was based off as a theme from Warner Bros. syndication show, Extra during Maureen O'Boyle era starting in September 1997.

Visuals: Depends on the variant, but these usually feature a 2008 WNBC logo in the style of the variant, which can be seen below.

- Hearts: The heart is drawn on a red background.
- Statue of Liberty: The Statue of Liberty is drawn on a purple background.
- NY/NJ/CT: The map of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut is drawn on a gold background.
Trivia: This is based directly on the station's slogan "Together, We're 4 New York", an sequel to the station's iconic slogan "We're 4 New York" from 1992 to 1995 and from 2007 onwards.

Audio: the calming piano tune and the voiceover (voiced by John Pleisse) saying "Together, We're 4 New York".
Availability: First appeared in October of 2020 and it is used in tandem with the previous logo.
13th ID (July 6, 2021- )
Visuals: The sliding appearing and the "NBC" text with "WNBC New York" appears on the bottom right side when the 2008 WNBC logo and the text from the previous two logos appears on the NYC skyline.

- On the non-AM newscasts, known as News 4 New York, the "NEWS AT [TIME]" was later added to the logo.
- On Today in New York, the NBC peacock logo and the words "TODAY In New York" was in placed of the "4 New York" logo.
- On the station's 2021 year ender promo, the words "TOGETHER WE'RE 4 NEW YORK" appears next to the logo.
- After the NBC network announced in November 2022 that its peacock logo will redrawn, if is unclear that the 2008 "4 New York" logo will updating it with the 2022 redrawn peacock logo on newscasts opens and station IDs for a foreseeable future.
