Background

This is the production arm of Harlech Television (later HTV).

Harlech

Logo (May 20, 1968-1970)

Visuals: It's a still version of the 1968 ident, but only smaller, and "PRODUCTION" or "PRESENTATION" is added below the logo.

Technique: A still graphic

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on programmes from the company until the switch to colour in 1970.

  • Harlech-era programmes have not been preserved due to wiping.
  • Thanks to its short lifespan and lack of known programmes, this logo is harder to find.
  • It has been seen on HTV's earliest programmes, but it is unknown which one has this logo intact.
  • Like before, the only known trace of this logo comes from the Transdiffusion website.

HTV Productions

1st Logo (April 6, 1970-April 3, 1988)

Visuals:

  • Opening: Same as the station ID of the era.
  • Closing: This is a still version of the 1970 HTV logo, typically accompanied with in-credit text.

Variants:

  • An in-credit variant with the text "Produced by" above the logo and "In association with PRIMETIME TELEVISION LTD." and the copyright notice below it. This was seen on the 1986 Disney Channel mini-series Return to Treasure Island.
  • Another in-credit variant has the logo and the word "LIMITED" next to it to make it read "HTV LIMITED" under the Hemisphere Productions Limited and the Sidney Glazier Productions text, superimposed in the background of a man praying. This can be seen on the 1973 TV movie Catholics.
  • Another in-credit version has the "Produced by" text on the side of the logo with "A NEWLAND-RAYNOR PRODUCTION" above it and "in association with The Callender Company" below it. This was seen on the 1984 TV movie Arch of Triumph.
  • On Robin of Sherwood, the logo is on the same row as "AN" and "PRODUCTION" within the end credits.
  • On Deadly Strangers and The Woman He Loved, "in association with" appears above the logo. The former also has the logo within the end credits.
  • On Jenny's War, the IAW notice appears below the logo.
  • At the end of The Great Little Trains of Wales, the words "colour production" appear below the words "CYMRU WALES". This variant may also have been seen on other programmes too.
  • A variant of the generic version, in which the animation is more cohesive and the logo remains thick exists.
  • On Y Gwr O Gwr Yr Aran, the Cymru Wales variant has a copyright stamp added.
  • On A Breed of Men as well as most shows between 1970 and the early 80s, "COLOUR PRODUCTION" appears underneath the logo.
  • On an HTV West airing to An Officer and a Gentleman as well as shows during the 1980s, only either "Production" or "Presentation" appears below the logo (the latter of which was seen at the end of movies and imported programmes such as Thunderbirds, among others).
  • On Y Byd ar Bedwar, the logo is smaller and against a black background.
  • On Clive’s Walks, the logo is paired with the Gunnell Goulding Films logo. The latter is on the right with "production for" leading into HTV West's. Additionally, a copyright stamp with a big copyright symbol is seen underneath Gunnell Goulding's logo.
  • A variant had the HTV logo beside the text "LIMITED", in which "and" can be seen below. There's another one with "Ltd" in a much plainer font located beside it.
    • On Three Wishes for Jamie, "LIMITED" is simplified to just "LTD" and "and" was removed.
    • An in-credit version of this variant also exists.
  • On Highway, the logo is paired with six other ITV franchise logos on a blue background. HTV's logo appears on the centre right.
  • A variant from the Morning Mass uses the HTV West logo and reads "OUTSIDE BROADCAST PRODUCTION" below which also exists. Copyright information also appears below that.

Technique:

  • Opening: Scanimation.
  • Closing: A still graphic.

Audio:

  • Opening: Same as the station ID of the era.
  • Closing: The ending theme of the programme or none.

Availability: Seen on some VHS and DVD releases of HTV programming, both in the UK and U.S., such as Flower Stories and John Silver's Return to Treasure Island, among others.

  • It is also intact on the VHS release of Robin Hood... the Legend.
  • Some prints of the 1984 TV movie Arch of Triumph, as seen on a 2004 airing on Starz Family, have the animated version (in low-pitch thanks to the PAL-to-NTSC conversion), following the 1992 version of the 1984 Warner Bros. Pictures logo with the Time Warner Entertainment byline.
  • Its last known appearance was on The Woman He Loved.

2nd Logo (September 28, 1987-December 31, 1992)

Visuals:

  • Opening: Same as the station ID of the era.
  • Closing: On a royal blue gradient background, either linear or radial we see a metallic version of the HTV logo from the time, with a drop shadow added. Below it are the words reading either "Production" or "Presentation" (the latter of which was seen at the end of movies and imported programmes).

Variants:

  • A royal blue gradient linear background variant with WEST and an HTV copyright notice appearing below also exists which was seen on HTV West programmes.
  • Starting on September 1, 1989, the HTV logo looks less metallic, appears on a different gradient background, and the text below reads either "AN HTV CYMRU WALES PRODUCTION FOR", "AN HTV WEST PRODUCTION FOR" or "AN HTV PRODUCTION FOR" with the 1989 ITV logo appearing below on networked programmes.
  • Sometimes, "Production" would be reworded to either "Programme" or "Presentation" (the latter or which was seen at the end of movies and imported programmes).
  • On Keynotes, the HTV West logo, shown with a metallic sheen, flips in-credit before stopping and then flipping out to leave room for the Reg Grundy Productions logo.
  • On Garden Club, the logo is paired with the 1982 Channel 4 logo.
  • Another variant has "LIMITED" appear below the "V" and the text "AND" below the logo.
  • On the first UK airing of Ghostbusters (1984), after the credits rolled, the credits transitions into the 1987 endboard via a "wisp" effect, now containing the head of the "No-Ghost" logo above it with the same transition (it also appears to be cropped from the opening shot of the movie).
  • On HTV West programmes produced for Channel 4, the text is reworded to either "AN HTV WEST PRODUCTION FOR CHANNEL FOUR" or "AN HTV WEST PRODUCTION FOR" and the 1982 Channel 4 logo and the copyright notice both appearing below (beginning on September 1, 1989 for the latter).
  • On Morning Mass, the text underneath the logo reads "AN HTV WEST OUTSIDE BROADCAST FOR ITV" with the 1989 ITV logo appearing below.

Visuals: This is a still version of the 1993 ident but with "Production" in the ITC Newtext font appearing underneath the 1993 HTV logo.

  • A special endboard has the logo in a milky transparent white colour, while several sheens of colour could be seen in it. The background is a mix of blue/green/red hues, and "PRESENTATION" is seen below in a white Bank Gothic MD BT font.
  • "Production" may be reworded to "Presentation" or "Programme", both in the ITC Newtext font.
  • Like before, the 1989 ITV logo appears below the HTV text on networked programmes.
  • A variant with the text reading "AN HTV PRESENTATION FOR ITV" (with the text in the ITC Newtext font and ITV being in the form of the 1989 logo) also exists.
  • On programmes produced for Channel 4 such as Wild Shots, the text reads "AN HTV PRODUCTION FOR" (in a different font other than ITC Newtext) with the 1982 Channel 4 logo on the right, sometimes with a copyright notice also appearing below.
  • On Cymru Newydd, this logo shares the screen with the 1982 Channel 4, 1988 BBC Cymru and 1987 S4C logos.
  • An in-credit variant exists which is seen on Wycliffe, simply consisting of the print version of the 1993 logo in a blue gradient.
    • This variant may also be superimposed and perhaps in a different shade of blue.
