Background

This is the production arm of UTV, formerly Ulster Productions.


Ulster Productions

1st Logo (October 31, 1959-1969)

Visuals: Superimposed in the end credits, the oscilloscope logo is within an outlined box next to the stacked text "ULSTER TELEVISION Northern Ireland".

Technique: A superimposed hand-drawn graphic.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability: Seen on The Scandalous Parson.

2nd Logo (1969-December 31, 1988)

Visuals: This is a still version of the 1969 ident with "COLOUR" added underneath the company name.

Variants:

  • A black and white variant exists.
  • A variant has a copyright stamp in Roman numerals and a white colour underneath "PRODUCTION".
  • On one programme, "COLOUR" is replaced with "OUTSIDE BROADCAST".
  • An in-credit variant also exists, consisting of the logo and text in a thicker format and the company name in a serif font.
  • On programmes produced for Channel 4 such as Make it Pay, the logo appears with the text reading "An Ulster Television Production for Channel Four" which appears below.
  • On Highway, the logo is paired with six other ITV franchise logos on a blue background. Ulster's logo appears on the bottom centre.

Availability: Seen on programmes by Ulster from the time-period until the end of 1988.

  • The black and white variant was seen on Billy Graham in Ulster.
  • The 1980 opening variant of this logo was used on all networked programmes by Ulster until ITV abolished frontcaps starting on January 1, 1988.

3rd Logo (January 1, 1989-June 4, 1993)

Visuals: Like before, it is a still version of its respective 1989 ident but with "production" inserted underneath the company name.

Variants:

  • Starting on September 1, 1989, the logo is given a gradient look, the text reads "AN ULSTER TELEVISION PRODUCTION FOR" and the 1989 ITV logo appears below on networked programmes.
  • Programmes co-produced with Channel 4 has the grey bar placed on the bottom of the screen, reading the copyright notice in Roman numerals. Above it is "An Ulster Television Production for CHANNEL FOUR".

Audio: The ending theme of the programme or none.

Availability: Seen on programmes by Ulster from the time-period until 1993.

  • These include Swings & Roundabouts, God's Frontiersmen, and An Irish Evening: Live at the Grand Opera House, Belfast, among others.

UTV Productions

1st Logo (June 4, 1993-2001)

Visuals: Just a still version of the 1993 ident.

Variants:

  • Most of the time, the logo exists as an in-credit notice.
  • On a 1999 episode of Insight, the logo was given a shadow effect.

Technique: A still CGI render.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme or none.

Availability: Seen on programmes by UTV from the time-period until 2001.

  • These include Lesser Spotted Ulster, Insight, Ulster Unearthed and Understanding Northern Ireland, among others.
  • The normal logo was seen on a 1995 UTV airing to Murder, She Wrote.
  • The in-credit variant can be seen on Insight and Ulster Unearthed.

2nd Logo (2003)

Visuals: The print version of the UTV logo with "PRODUCTION" added underneath is against a blue background with rising streaks. They crossfade into another background with a spotlight at the top right corner of the screen.

Technique: Computer effects.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme or none.

Availability: Seen on Insight episodes from this period.

3rd Logo (2000s)

Visuals: Mainly an in-credit notice containing the 2002 UTV logo.

Technique: A superimposed digital graphic.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme or none.

Availability: Only known to have been seen on later episodes of Lesser Spotted Ulster, which are intact on Northern Ireland Screen's Digital Film Archive website.

4th Logo (2009)

Visuals: On a dark blue moving background, a shaded version of the UTV logo is shown underneath a co-producer's name.

Technique: Computer animation.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme or none.

Availability: Like the second logo, it is only known to have been seen on Insight episodes from the late 2000s.

5th Logo (2012)

Visuals: On a dark blue background with a spinning glass UTV logo, a shiny version of the UTV logo is displayed either on the centre or bottom of the screen if paired with a co-producer.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme or none.

Availability: Same as before.

6th Logo (2016-2020)

Visuals: On a white background with a part of it peeling away, the 2016 UTV logo in turquoise is on top of "PRODUCTION" and a copyright stamp on the bottom.

Variant: An in-credit variant exists. In a similar fashion to the 2013 ITV endcap, the logo is either white or black on a black/white background and with "PRODUCTION" removed.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme or none.

Availability: Seen on programmes by UTV from the time-period until 2020.

  • These include Paul & Nick's Big Canadian Food Trip and Rewind with Julian, some of which can be found on streaming websites.
  • The normal logo was seen on the latter.
