Background

Channel 4 Video was the home video arm of Channel 4 that released the channel's programmes on home media, and also select third-party programmes as well. Initially, Channel 4 Video self-distributed their releases, but beginning in 1998, VCI took over.

When VCI renamed to 2 Entertain Video in September 2004, Channel 4 ended their deal with them in June 2005 and started to self-distribute DVD releases under the Channel 4 DVD brand because of the BBC's ownership in 2 Entertain.

Channel 4 Video

1st Logo (1995-2000)

Visuals: Just the 1982 "Round and Back" channel ID, but once the animation finishes, the word "VIDEO" flashes in with a white radial burst, which briefly becomes multi-coloured before it fades out.

Technique: CGI designed by Lambie-Nairn and animated by Bo Gehring and Associates in Los Angeles.

Audio: The 1992 "Fourscore" fanfare.

Availability: Seen on Channel 4 Video releases from the era, distributed by VCI such as The Lost Gardens of Heligan, among others.

  • Even though Channel 4's ident changed on October 11, 1996, this logo continued to be used afterwards until 2000.

2nd Logo (2000-June 2005)

Visuals: Just the 1999 Channel 4 "Square" logo, set in its usual position on the right side of the screen, on a black background.

Variants:

  • On the UK VHS release of Escape from Colditz, the logo zooms in.
  • Later releases from 2003-2005 have the word "VIDEO" in a white box below the "Square" logo, plus the logo fades in and out.
  • On Bo Selecta! DVD releases, the logo transitions to the DVD menu, which depends on the DVD release.

Technique: A still, computerized graphic.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on Channel 4 VHS and DVD releases from the era, distributed by VCI.

  • Examples include releases of Angela Anaconda, Ali-G, Graham Norton, and television movies/specials such as Raymond Briggs' The Bear, Merlin, and Gulliver's Travels, among others.

Channel 4 DVD

1st Logo (July 2005-2013)

Visuals: Just one of the 2004 Channel 4 stings, in which the logo's blocks contort into the logo, then fly separately and contort again on a white background. The background inside the "4" varies upon release.

Variant: Sometimes, the logo sequence's colors are inverted.

Technique: Computer animation by Rudd Studio.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on all Channel 4 DVD releases from the time period until 2013.

  • Examples include Deal or No Deal, The Inbetweeners, Brass Eye, various Jimmy Carr stand-up shows, some Sarah Millican stand-up shows, and reissues of Channel 4 content previously released by VCI.
  • On non-Channel 4 releases, this can also be found on DVD releases of Miranda and I Can Cook.

2nd Logo (2013-2016)

Visuals: On a black background, parts of the Channel 4 logo fly in from the right side of the screen, coloured white on the fronts with various clips of the 2004-2015 Channel 4 idents playing on the backing of them. As they all fly into frame, the letters "DVD", replacing the long horizontal bar on the logo, swoop in one by one, and then they all snap together to form the logo. The logo continues to float about until it cuts to black.

Technique: CGI by Rudd Studio.

Audio: A tribal theme with a clang at the end.

Availability: Seen on all Channel 4 DVD releases from the time period until 2016, such as the second season of Utopia.

Final Note

As of 2016, Channel 4 licenses its DVD and Blu-ray releases to Dazzler Media and Acorn Media, among other companies.
