Background

Something Weird Video is an American film distributor founded by Mike Vraney in Seattle, Washington in 1990. The company is known for distributing exploitation films on DVD, VHS, and Blu-ray Disc. Vraney died in 2014 from lung cancer while Something Weird Video still continues to distribute films to this day. The company is named after the 1967 film Something Weird, and the logo is taken from that film's original poster art.

1st Logo (Early 1990's?)

Visuals: On a background of inverted footage of a nuclear explosion while shifting colors is the word "SOMETHING" in a wavy-like font and below it the word "WEIRD" in the same font, along with the text "ViDeO" in a funky-like font below the logo, and the entire logo is surrounded by a rectangular outline border while also being tilted a little to the left. The entire logo (including the border) changes colors in black, grey, white, yellow, blue, green, magenta, red, and purple.

Technique: Live action footage and computerized effects.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on the company's earliest VHS releases such as Hallucination Generation.

2nd Logo (1990-2000s?)

Visuals: There is a black and dark yellow color wheel background that seems to constantly spin throughout the entire length of the logo. Then we see the text in a purple wavy-like font "SOMETHING WEIRD" zoom out. Then the letters in a dark green funky-like font "VIDEO" (with the trademark symbol) appear one at a time.

Variants:

  • The logo can sometimes be brighter.
  • There is a variant where the background ripples and the logo is already formed (aside from "VIDEO", which fades in later).

Trailer Variant: In some of their trailers, a fanfare is played over the logo while you can still hear the original music of the logo.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: An eerie horror-themed fanfare loops twice throughout the logo.

Audio Variant:

  • A jazzy trumpet fanfare that seems to loop twice throughout the logo.
  • A jazzy fanfare that used to follow the normal music twice.

Availability: Seen on their VHS, DVD, and Blu-Ray releases from said years. It can also be seen in the middle of trailer and intermission compilation videos.

3rd logo (2000's-)

Visuals: There is a blue background with a red circle spinning throughout the entire length of the logo. Then we see the text in a cream colored wavy-like font "SOMETHING WEIRD". Then the letters in a olive green funky-like font "VIDEO" (with the registered trademark symbol) appear one at a time.

Variant: The logo can sometimes be brighter.

Trailer Variant: In some of their trailers, some fanfare is played over the logo while you can still hear the original music of the logo.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: Same as the second logo but with the man saying something in reverse.

Audio Variant: A jazzy trumpet tune that seems to loop twice throughout the logo.

Availability: Seen on their VHS, DVD, and Blu-Ray releases from said years.

4th Logo (2010's-)

Visuals: Same as the second logo, but more enhanced and without the text VIDEO.

Variant: Same as the second logo, but more enhanced.
