Anchor Bay Entertainment (2008-2017)

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

Background

In 2008, Starz Media reverted back Starz Home Entertainment to their former name of Anchor Bay Entertainment. In March 2011, The Weinstein Company purchased 25% of Starz Media, including Anchor Bay.

On June 30, 2016, Lionsgate reached an agreement with Starz to acquire the company for $4.4 billion; the merger was completed on December 8. On August 29, 2017, Anchor Bay was folded into Lionsgate's home media division. From August 30, 2017 to 2021, Anchor Bay's website remained online, but with all the links broken. Anchor Bay was revived on February 15, 2024, when Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz acquired the rights to the Anchor Bay name.

1st Logo (December 18, 2007-2009)

Visuals: Against a reflecting pool of water, there is an image of a sailboat, with a filmstrip in place of the right mast, against drawings of the sea and sky behind the sailboat. It is enclosed in a box. While it is zooming out, a black box wipes in and encloses the sailboat. Above the sailboat is the company name in Impact font, with "ANCHOR BAY"; "BAY" is in sky blue and the hyphens in the "A"s are missing. Below is "E N T E R T A I N M E N T". A second later, the byline "a starz company" fades in below.

Variant: A still version on a black or white background exists. This version sometimes has the then-new Starz byline.

Technique: Computer animation.

Audio: The last notes from the 3rd logo for the original Anchor Bay or none.

Availability:

  • It can be seen on The Grand, Lower Education, Jimmy and Judy, and The Lather Effect.
  • The still variant can be seen on the Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!: A Tale Of Tails DVD and all Thomas and Friends DVDs released around 2008 (except for Trackside Tunes and Percy Takes the Plunge, in which the regular version is used.)
  • This logo was also used in tandem with the Starz Home Entertainment name on some releases such as Hatchet.

2nd Logo (January 6, 2009-October 10, 2017)

Visuals: On a black background, a stylized "A", which resembles a sail, zooms out. It shines a bit, then the words "A N C H O R B A Y ENTERTAINMENT" zoom out line-by-line. A Starz byline "vaporizes" in underneath.

Variants:

  • Some releases feature a more bluish "A" and the company name tinted yellow.
  • On some DVDs such as Tugger: The Jeep 4x4 Who Wanted to Fly, the logo is still.

Technique: Computer animation.

Audio: Gentle wave sounds similar to the Anchor Bay Films logo or none.

Availability: Seen on Starz/Anchor Bay DVD releases from the period such as Stan Helsing, Scream 4, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, Where the Day Takes You, Apollo 18, The Iron Lady, all Chuggington DVDs, Tickety Toc: Chime Time Adventures, and all Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! DVDs starting with A Little Help from My Friends, among others, including various other Starz Originals and AMC shows and The Weinstein Company/Dimension films.

3rd Logo (August 23, 2016-October 10, 2017)

Visuals: Same as the closing version of the 2016 Starz Originals logo, only "STARZ ORIGINALS" is replaced by the previous Anchor Bay Entertainment logo in white, and the Starz byline (in its 2016 form) appears below.

Technique: Computer animation by Troika Design Group.

Audio: The Starz Originals closing logo's theme.

Availability: Seen on a few titles, such as 47 Meters Down, the second season of Ash vs. Evil Dead, and the seventh season of The Walking Dead on DVD. This also appeared on the Tubi streaming print of the 2012 film Bait.
