Background

Galaxy was launched by British Satellite Broadcasting on 26 March 1990, alongside BSB's other networks (The Power Station, The Sports Channel, The Movie Channel and Now/The Computer Channel), functioning as BSB's entertainment network. Following the merger of BSB and Sky Television to form BSkyB, the channel was closed down and its transponder handed over to Sky One on 2 December 1990. Much of Galaxy's original programming was lost afterwards, with Sky One only pulling a handful of them into its lineup.

ID (26 March-2 December 1990)

Visuals: A light blue capital "G" enclosed in a dark blue squarial is seen on the center of the screen. Around it is a changing sequence of swirls of colours and stars on a black backdrop, to which the squarial's frame also changes its multiple colours. Midway through, the channel name "GALAXY" appears under the squarial, along with the BSB emblem in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Variants:

  • Sometimes, the ident freezes at the end.
  • On the ident's final showing on 2 December 1990, it froze and zoomed out to the point of only being a dot in the middle of the screen, followed by the channel's test card.

Technique: Live-action with practical effects, directed by Daniel Barber at Lambie-Nairn.

Audio: A lush violin piece, sometimes followed by a continuity announcer.
