Background

The Seven Network is an Australian television network launched in 1956. Seven is known for being Australia's Olympic broadcaster, having aired most summer games since 1980, with the exceptions of Beijing 2008 and London 2012, which were broadcast by Nine.


Australian Television Network

1st ID (1963-1969)

Visuals: Inside the television tube, on a black background, there is a silhouette of Australia with the words "AUSTRALIAN TELEVISION NETWORK" underneath which there is the word "PRESENTATION"

Technique: A still image.

Audio: None.

Seven Network

1st (known) ID (1969-1975)

Visuals: We see some live action footage as a circle rotates into view showing another live action clip or photograph. The clip/photo changes in the circle a few times before it rotates to reveal the 7 logo, a number 7 inside a thick circle, initially in black against the live action background, before turning white as the background fades to black.

Technique: The rotating and appearance of the logo.

Audio: A dramatic brass fanfare.

2nd ID (March 1, 1975-1979)


Visuals: We see a mass of yellow lines rotate outward leaving the centre of the screen black. Similar lines then appear but do the opposite. Then, the 7 logo (consisting of a rainbow-gradient circle with a "7" inside of it) appear as a warp, unfolding as it appears.

Variant: There's an extended variant where the text "COLORS YOUR WORLD" appears as a warp, and repeats.

Technique: Scanimate.

Audio: A drum roll reminiscent of the theme from Hawaii Five-O, followed by a triumphant fanfare, used on the channel at the time.

3rd ID (1976-1979)

Visuals: We see a glint of light and the white seven from the logo flips into view. The ring then zooms out into place, starting in white, with the rainbow colours fading in.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: A single female vocalist singing "Who Colours Your World?" with no additional instrumentation.

4th ID (1976-1979)


Visuals: We see live action clips of individuals waving, pointing and gesturing the number 7 with their fingers before cutting to the 7 logo from the previous ID morphing in.

Variant: In later variants, the logo flips into place, rather than morphing

Technique: Live-action and the logo morphing in at the end, presumably achieved with Scanimate.

Audio: First, a woman sings "Who colours your world?". Then a country-esque theme accompanied by a male singing "Well everyone knows the colour machine; it's Seven, Seven! It's orange, yellow, red and green; Seven, Seven! If you're blue or in the pink, things are better than you think. Just colour your world with the colour machine called Seven!".

Audio Variant: Later versions feature a disco version of the music.

5th ID (1979-1980?)

Visuals: Over a firework-like explosion we see 2 number 7s on top of each other, one vertically flipped, slide into the frame. As the explosion intensifies, the ring draws itself and the two sevens morph back into one.

Technique: Scanimate.

Audio: A calm, country-esque tune with singers singing "You're on Seven"

6th ID (1982-1983)

Visuals: Clips from a number of Seven Network shows appear. Then a neon city skyline appears and moves forwards at the bottom of the frame. Above, a cluster of 7 logos fly in to form the words "WATCH US NOW". The words fly offscreen and a number of circles spiral and form a "vortex" effect to transition to the rainbow 7 logo which zooms in on a black background with a blue gradient.

Variants: Multiple versions utilizing different live action clips exist.

Technique: Live-action and early computer effects.

Audio: A modified version of the "Just Watch Us Now" campaign song used by NBC in the United States.

7th ID (1984-1986)


Visuals: The ident starts off with people gesticulating vividly (to represent the enthusiasm for the channel). We then see the 7 logo, this time in CGI. It is on a grid in which the logo is mirrored. The camera pans out to the bottom of this "grid", only of which ends up appearing to be the giant words "BE THERE" with the 7 logo beside it. The words "LET'S ALL" then wipe in on the left corner.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Same as the NBC ident of a similar nature, but with a different choir and re-worded to "Seven's great, let's all be there!"

8th ID (1986-1987?)

Visuals: We see the Seven logo rotate to face away from us, as it does this, the camera pans down and around to reveal a marquee, similar to the NBC ident of the time on which we see the logo and the "Let's all be there" slogan emblazoned.

Trivia: This ident is actually a clip from the accompanying promo played in reverse.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Same as the NBC ident of a similar nature, but with a different choir, this time reworded to "Channel 7, Let's all be there".

Audio variant: There is a version with all the vocals removed except for "Channel Seven, let's all be there" removed.

9th ID (1987-22 January 1989)


Visuals: We see a CGI pillar, of which is grey. The 7 logo is moving up about it, but the colours are separate and the 7 is not shown. It is from the bottom view. Stars and other Australian symbols are reflected onto this block, of which, when the camera pans out to proper perspective, is the 7 itself. A light effect moves about the circle in the logo. The words "Let's Celebrate '88" (in reference to Australia's bicentennial year) wipe in with a trail effect, in a gold sans-serif font.

Variants:

  • An earlier variant lacks the light effect in the circle and features the "Let's all be there" slogan. Additionally, the background of the final logo features bars instead of dots.
  • Later on, the "Let's Celebrate '88" text was replaced with "AUSTRALIAN TELEVISION NETWORK", which just simply fades in during the ident. This variation also lacks the light effect that goes around the circle.
  • It was commonplace to have a station promo precede this logo, which upon completion wound fly off to the top right of the screen and reveal the logo midway through formation.

Technique: The panning and animation.

Audio: A lively fanfare with faint whooshes, followed by another choir singing "Let's celebrate, let's celebrate '88!" This somewhat copies NBC's third "Let's All Be There" promo/ID. The "AUSTRALIAN TELEVISION NETWORK" variant lacks this choir.

Audio variant:

  • The early version has a grand, triumphant fanfare, leading into the "Let's all be there" jingle from the previous idents.
  • The "Australian Television Network" version has a slightly different orchestration of the "Let's Celebrate '88" music.

10th ID (1989-1990)

Visuals: We see multiple white translucent circles from in front of each other, with multiple rectangles behind it that form a rainbow gradient. The background is black, with white dots on the "floor". The camera pans so that these circles are forward-facing. The new 7 logo (which consists of a circle with a split 7 connecting to it) then forms from this, but it is very faint. The words "ONLY THE BEST" move in from the bottom of the screen, with a forward-facing trail. These words are metallic silver with a gold bevel. The words settle on the rectangular gradient. The word "on" in the same colour as "ONLY THE BEST" fades in with a chyron trail effect. A more defined 7 logo places itself onto the faint 7 from the side of the screen.

Variant: As with the previous logo, it was common for a station promo to precede the ident. Upon completion of the promo, it would fly upwards and fade away, revealing the logo halfway through formation.

Technique: The camera pan and the logo formation.

Audio: A loud synth-pop jingle, with yet again another choir singing "Seven is Coming Through", which is, again, a repurposing of NBC's "Only on NBC" ID from the previous year.

Audio Variants: A number of different arrangements of the music exist:

  • A calm, orchestral arrangement
  • A slightly different orchestral arrangement
  • an upbeat, funky version

11th ID (1990-1994)

Visuals: On a computer generated horizon, the camera zooms rapidly towards the 7 logo, now in gold, before swinging across the logo close-up, then zooming out and settling into place. Occasionally the name of the station's city will appear below

Technique: Early 90s computer effects by Garner McLennan Design on Silicon Graphics computers with Alias PowerAnimator.

Audio: A triumphant brassy fanfare.

12th ID (15 April 1995-1996?)


Visuals: The ID is mostly snapshots of Australian TV personalities and a female singer, and the animation/graphics are describing shows from the time period. It ends with a man in a Superman costume jumping to the ground (which is blue), who makes a "7" symbol with his hand (showing his hand, then two fingers in the form of a peace sign). The 7 logo in orange is beside him, with the word "Discover" in a yellow Times-like font. He then "flies away".

Variants: There were multiple variants of this promo, but this was presumably the most common.

Technique: "Superman" appearing and flying away, and the logo itself.

Audio: A female singer, of whom is singing "Discover it All on Seven", with a jazz-rock accompaniment.

13th ID (1996-1998)

Visuals: We start with a family running through their house door. We cut to a scene featuring a red door with the number "7" in it it. The family is then seen on a couch on a black background with a golden retriever lying underneath the couch. We then zoom out to reveal that they're atop the "7" in a gold Seven Network logo. The text "every one's home" then un-blurs underneath the logo.

Technique: A combination of live-action, chroma-key and CGI.

Audio: A rock tune with a male voice singing "Everyone's home, everyone's home with Seven!" and a female choir capping off the jingle.

14th ID (1998)

Visuals: Across drone footage of an ocean and rocky outcrops, the 3D text "everyone's home" spins into view, then the Seven Network logo from before flashes in and flips, as the ocean footage segues into a drone footage of a city. Gold and light streaks then appear throughout as the logo centres to us. The city footage then flies into the night sky, as the logo fades into the text:

Technique: Live-action and CGI.

Audio: A female choir, different from the previous logo, is heard singing "Everyone's home", as this segues into a bell and synth theme which ends into the same melody from before.

15th ID (1999)


Visuals: Multicoloured light beams emerge from a shiny silver 7 logo. The camera follows the beam by panning to the right. As the panning shot continues it passes a woman carrying a red drape curtain on a red background, a man jumping on an orange background, a woman seen as though she is standing on the camera throwing what appears to be sand on a yellow background, a girl on a swing against a green background and a man falling into a blue background like it's a swimming pool. The live action then fades and the background zooms out to reveal a multicoloured strip showing all the previous colours and the 7 logo fades in below the line with the slogan "The One to Watch" fading in above it

Trivia: This is the last set of idents to use the Circle 7 logo that had been in use in multiple forms since the 1960s. It also marks the launch of "The One To Watch", which Seven would continue to use until 2005.

Variants: Local variants were created. These typically play out much the same, but with people from the local area appearing in each segment instead of the previously described individuals.

Technique: A mix of live action and digital effects.

Audio: A guitar-driven instrumental cover of "Every Breath You Take" by The Police, particularly emphasising the "I'll be watching you" portion of the song.

16th ID (2000-2001)

Visuals: A multicoloured line is seen sliding from the upper-right corner on a black background. It then turns and creates a light trail, forming a red-green-blue-coloured inverted triangle and into a stylised "7". "the one to watch" phases in underneath the logo.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A futuristic ditty is heard which is capped off by a soft clapping sound. A male announcer says "Seven, the one to watch." in a deep voice.

17th ID (2001-2002)

Visuals: Unknown.

Variants: Unknown.

Technique: Unknown.

Audio: Unknown.

18th ID (2002-2003)

Visuals: On a white background, a ribbon with a red-orange gradient flies in and makes a "C"-like shape, and flies to create the Seven Network logo.

Trivia: This package is the last to use the original version of the "ribbon 7". Given the short lifespan, only being used during the summer of 2002-2003. It's possible it was a placeholder for the forthcoming rebrand which simplified the logo into its present form.

Technique: It's all in early 2000s CGI.

Audio: The ending part of the ID's music.

19th ID (2003)

Visuals: Unknown.

20th ID (2004-2005)

Visuals: Unknown.

Variant: Another ident shows unknown, with the logo placed on the bottom half and off-centre to the left.

Technique: Live action combined with CGI.

Audio: Unknown.

21st ID (2005-December 2007)

Visuals: Depends on the variant. All of these include the Seven Network mascot (a TV screen with a red Seven logo in it on a white background, with black limbs, white gloves and shoes named "TV Man") doing activities, which differs in every ID.

Variants:

  • TV Man is seen frying a hot dog. The hot dog burns as he gets confused. "GOTTALOVEIT7" ("7" being its corporate logo) appears beneath the screen.
  • On a white background, we see TV Man walk towards us. He raises his arms as the text "TV turns 50" appears atop him. Used for Seven's 50th anniversary.
  • TV Man is driving Santa's sleigh as he passes in front of the full moon, throwing out gifts. "GottaloveChristmas" and the Seven logo fade in underneath. Used during Christmas 2007.
  • On the ATN7 analogue shutdown, superimposed on the final goodbye message, TV Man looks at the camera and does a snap gesture leading into a "TV cutting off" animation. He also says "Bye-bye!" in a high pitched voice.

Visuals: On a red background, the text "love" (with a love heart inside the "o") appears on screen. The background changes to white and the text zooms out, revealing the "gottaloveit" slogan. It glitches and changes to "on", followed by the Seven Network logo.

Variants:

  • In Prime7 areas, the text "PRiME" with an underline is added beside the Seven logo.
  • In GWN7 areas, the text "GWN" with an underline is added beside the Seven logo.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Airy sound effects as the text appears on-screen, along with fast clicking as the text glitches.

Audio: The Prime7/GWN7 variant initially used a different, upbeat musical score, which was replaced by the regular music in late 2013.

26th ID (2014-2016)

Visuals: In front of a beach, TV Man walks to the audience. He gives a thumbs up, and "Australia's #1" appears atop him.

27th ID (2016-2020)


Visuals: Four thick white chevrons pointing right appear individually over an interchanging orange, yellow, lime, and pink background. After the fourth chevron appears, three thin chevrons in differentiating sizes appear in front and slide off screen. As this happens, the camera turns right at a 45 degree angle and zooms in near the tip of the centermost chevron. The background changes to white and two more chevrons, this time blue and of varying thicknesses, pass by from the left. After that, a red field with the aforementioned chevron-shaped tip slides past, followed by an additional two white chevrons. The background cuts to white as unknown.

Variants:

  • In Prime7 areas, the text "PRiME" with an underline is added beside the Seven logo.
  • In GWN7 areas, the text "GWN" with an underline is added beside the Seven logo.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: An upbeat rock tune with a harmonising male singer.

28th ID (2021-)

Visuals: On a background with red and black masks, the masks move to the sides of the screen, revealing a black background, with the Seven logo in it. The logo shines briefly.

Variants:

  • A variant is used for Prime7. The animation is the same, but the text "PRiME" with an underline is added beside the Seven logo and the Seven logo is pushed to the left to make way for the text. A second Prime7 variant has the Seven logo slide to the center of the screen as the Prime text disappears, and shines as usual.
  • Following Seven West Media's acquisition of Prime Media Group and their stations' subsequent rebrand to Seven in 2022, a slight variant of the ident, in which the Seven logo does not zoom in along with the masks was used in place of the regular version in those areas.
  • A special ident was used for McDonald's Australia (known colloquially as Macca's), On a black background with sparkles and confetti, we see TV Man, this time with inverted colours on his screen, and red accents on his shoes as well, with "50 Years of Macca's" (with the "0" being a French fry with the iconic Golden Arches logo) in the McDonald's corporate font, Speedee, fade in behind him as he strikes a dab pose.
  • A variant where the red background is now white and the black background is now red, the Seven logo is now white and the text "AUSTRALIA'S #1" appears underneath, exists.

Audio: A sound reminiscent to a reversed shattering sound, followed by a three-note synth tune.
