Background

Luxoflux was a Santa Monica, California-based game studio founded by Adrian Stephens and Peter Morawiec in January 1997. While the studio's name was first intended to be "Alpha Channel", the name was changed to "Luxoflux" due to the name already being in use. After collaborating on several titles since their inception, Luxoflux would be bought by Activision in October 2002, and later shut down in 2010 due to layoffs at Activision Blizzard. Many Luxoflux employees would migrate to Treyarch, another Santa Monica studio owned by Activision, after the closure.

1st Logo (June 1, 1998-December 15, 2000)

Logo: On a black background, we see an orange oval banner, with the word "Luxoflux" written inside in a rectangular font, rotate vertically to its full view. The text shines afterwards.

Captions: On Vigilante 8 and Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense, a caption appears in an italic green font, which changes every time you boot up one of the two games (similar to the opening of Futurama).

Variants:

  • On Star Wars Demolition, we see the banner turn to face us, except this time it's rusted and squished. The banner tries to stretch to its normal shape, but bounces back. Three hammer strikes happen and the logo is forced back to its usual shape, and the rust dissipates from the logo. The logo shines once.
    • The PlayStation version has the logo shifted upward with "Enjoy this game, you will" underneath.
    • The Dreamcast version has the logo centered.

Technique: 3D animation. For the PlayStation and Dreamcast versions of the Vigilante 8 games, the logo is pre-rendered CG, but on Nintendo 64, the logo is rendered in-engine and real time.

Music/Sounds: A windchime pass, then a crystallized shining noise.

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • On the N64 versions of both Vigilante 8 games, a brief rock tune is heard.
  • On Star Wars Demolition, we hear mechanical noises as the banner turns, wobbling as it stretches, hammer noises as it is bent into shape, and a whoosh as the rust disappears.

Availability: Seen on Vigilante 8 for PlayStation and Nintendo 64 and its sequel, Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense for the former and latter consoles, as well as Dreamcast. Also seen on Star Wars: Demolition for PlayStation and Dreamcast.

2nd Logo (November 4, 2003-June 23, 2008)

Logo: The logo from before appears with an emboss effect on the banner and a black arc surrounding the text. It usually appears after a custom sequence.

Captions: As with the previous logo, under the logo is a caption which usually changes each time you boot up the game.

Variants:

  • On True Crime: Streets of LA, Nick Kang (the main character) comes up to the screen and kicks it. The Luxoflux logo carves itself on the sole of his boot and flashes, displaying the finished logo.
  • On True Crime: New York City, Marcus Reed (the main character) comes to the screen and blasts it with his fist, where we see he has a ring on his finger. The Luxoflux logo appears and flashes.
  • On Shrek 2, a leprechaun appears in a cloud of green smoke, takes his hat off and pulls the logo out of it. It shines and fades out.
  • On Kung Fu Panda, the logo (this time the arc is now white) rotates blurred, which then becomes clear and shines.

Technique: Pre-rendered CGI.

Music/Sounds: A synthesized shining sound when the logo appears.

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • On Kung Fu Panda, we only hear a gong.
  • On Streets of LA, we hear Nick Kang (voiced by Russell Wong) yelling, a breaking glass sound, and then some car sounds.
    • If the caption below reads "Ride the Donkey!", donkey noises are heard instead of the car sounds.
  • On Shrek 2, a "pop" sound is heard when the leprechaun appears, and then a fast whoosh when he pulls the logo out of his hat.
  • On New York City, we hear Marcus (voiced by Avery Waddell) grunting, a quick hip hop breakbeat, then the shining sound. Afterwards, a character from the game would monologue the company's name, which changes each time that you boot up the game; for example, Terry (voiced by Mickey Rourke) says "It's Luxoflux, boy scout."

Availability: Seen on True Crime: Streets of LA, its sequel True Crime: New York City, Shrek 2 and Kung Fu Panda.

3rd Logo (June 23, 2009)

Note: The logo starts at 0:20.

Logo: The logo is designed in the same style as the others in the game. The word "Luxoflux" zooms in, transforming in the process. When complete, it gets enveloped by a blue laser banner, which becomes solid and turns into the usual logo.
