Background

PopCap Games is an American video game company that was founded in 2000 by John Vechey, Brian Fiete, and Jason Kapalka. In 2012, PopCap was acquired by Electronic Arts.

1st Logo (November 9, 2000-June 11, 2003)

File:2021-10-08 (3).png

Nicknames: "The Cap", "PopCap Cap", "Primitive Cap"

Logo: On a black background, the words "Pop" and "Cap" come from the left and right respectively to form the PopCap wordmark and a yellow circle with a red inner line. Finally, the word "GAMES" emerges from the top, stacked by letter next to the logo.

FX/SFX: Decent, but outdated 2D animation.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Rare. Made its first appearance on Diamond Mine and its last appearance on Typing Shark. It only appears on the Java versions however, as other versions remove the logo.

2nd Logo (February 25, 2003-January 30, 2013)

Nicknames: "The Cap II", "PopCap Cap II", "The Cap is Staring at You...", "The Cap of Plastering"

Logo: We see a remastered version of the previous logo.

Variant: Sometimes, it appears on the game's main menu.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: None or the opening/menu theme of the game.

Availability: Common.

  • First appeared on Bookworm (except the Java web version, which used the previous logo).
  • The version that isn't part of the main menu debuted on Bookworm Adventures.
  • It made its last appearance on the Java version of Plants vs. Zombies, released on January 30th, 2013.

3rd Logo (2006?-2016?)

Nicknames: "The Cap III", "PopCap Cap III", "Console Cap"

Logo: "Pop" falls and "Cap" rises to form the PopCap logo, which then shakes and some pixie dust appears.

Variant: On older versions of Plants vs. Zombies, One of the zombie's hand is seen. It tries to push it, but the logo slams and moves to the center.

FX/SFX: 2D animation that holds up better than the 1st logo.

Music/Sounds: A three-note acapella theme, then the sounds of metal clanking, and finally a magical sound. The variant added a clank sound, pushing sounds and a slam sound.

Availability: Rare. Only appeared on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and some DS ports of PopCap games. The variant appeared on older versions of Plants vs. Zombies.

4th Logo (Bejeweled 3 Custom Variant) (December 7, 2010)

Nicknames: "The Cap IV", "PopCap Cap IV", "The Butterfly Cap"

Logo: We see a blue-light blue-blue gradient background. A Bejeweled Gem appears with a pixie dust effect. It rotates to reveal the PopCap logo. The Bejeweled gem disappears while the logo shines. Bejeweled butterflies fly out of the logo, turning the background white. The PopCap logo finally fades to white, transitioning to the game itself.

FX/SFX: Effective 3D animation.

Music/Sounds: A synth orchestral version of the previous logo's theme.

Availability: It can only be seen on Bejeweled 3.

5th Logo (Febuary 24, 2012- )

Nicknames: "EA PopCap", "The Text of Boredom", "The Pop Goes Flat"

Logo: We zoom out to reveal the PopCap logo. The logo then explodes.

Variants:

  • On most games and trailers starting in 2014, it is still.
  • On some games, it is used on the main menu like the 2nd logo.

FX/SFX: Boring 2D animation.

Music/Sounds: A 6-note xylophone theme.

Availability: Current.

  • First appeared on the PS Vita port of Plants vs. Zombies, plastering over the previous logo, and made its first official appearance on the music video Stop Zombie Mouth.
  • The first game to use this was Bejeweled Live+.
  • The still version debuted on Plants vs. Zombies 2, released on July 13, 2013.
  • It also plasters the 2nd logo on current mobile prints of Plants vs. Zombies.
