Background and context

In the United Kingdom, tobacco companies relied on sponsoring sports events to compensate for a ban on cigarette advertising on television, which came into effect in 1965. Tobacco companies were no longer able to sponsor British sports events after 31 July 2005, due to the European Union’s Tobacco Advertising Directive.[1]

1st known Logo (1980s)


Visuals: In the dark BG, there are four clips of boat racing, airplane flying, car racing and soccer as the screen fades into the blue background while the Rothmans Video logo zooms in:

The text on the bottom reads as they zoom in: ROTHMANS ACTION SERIES. The screen flips to a clip of car racing, then it flips back to the Rothmans logo. The screen flips again to show a clip of a soccer game. The screen flips again to show the Rothmans logo. The screen flips again to show a clip of boat racing. The screen flips back to the Rothmans logo, and flips again to show a clip of air racing. The clip of air racing zooms out and shows the Rothman's logo without the text. The screen relocates to show pictures of tennis, boat racing, car racing, gliding, football, motorcycle racing and pauses it to show the Rothman's logo.
