ESPN Home Video

1st Logo (1988?-1992?)


Visuals: Over a black background, the logo starts with red and silver blocks zooming out and moving into place, forming the ESPN logo in silver. Then the text "HOME VIDEO" in white fades in below the logo.

Variant: On some tapes, the ESPN logo moves differently, and "HOME VIDEO" is larger.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: None.

Availability: Can be seen on ESPN VHS releases of the era, such as Sports Bloopers For Kids, among others. The variant can be seen on ESPN Unbelievable Sports Plays.

2nd Logo (1992?-1997?)

Visuals: Over a black background, the logo starts with pink, red, gold, green and blue copies of the ESPN logo moving and merging together, while zooming out fast and the color trails disappear. The spark appears over the lines, and "HOME VIDEO" slides in from the right.

Variant: On early tapes, the text "PRESENTS" fades in below.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: A synth theme with whooshes, and a chime over the theme.

Availability: Seen on ESPN's videotapes, like Sports Blooper Awards and various soccer-related tapes.

Logo (1997?-1999?)

Visuals: On a blue gradient background, there is a red box, containing clips of ESPN shows zooming out. The image then rotates over, revealing it was a red box with the ESPN logo, complete with the "THE WORLDWIDE LEADER IN SPORTS" slogan, and a black box with the word "VIDEO" below the logo from a slanted camera angle.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: An excerpt of the SportsCenter theme.

Availability: Seen on ESPN videos distributed by Buena Vista Home Video.

Visuals: On a blue gradient background, there is the lights that form the ESPN logo, which flashes quickly, piece by piece as it glows out white. The logo flashes, and a gray gradient shimmering line is shown below the logo, with the words "HOME ENTERTAINMENT" shown below the logo. The ESPN logo then dims.

Audio: Various thud sounds, followed by a crowd cheering.
