Sierra Entertainment (formerly known as
On-Line Systems and
Sierra On-Line) was a major PC game developer and publisher, known for their games named
King's Quest and
Leisure Suit Larry series. It was founded back in 1979 by Ken and Roberta Williams. They didn't make their game until 1980 when they released
Mystery House for the Apple II. In 1998-99, while the company suffered from financial troubles after the founders left the company, they announced an internal restructuring and major layoffs, which of their operations were divided into five separate brands, and some of the sub-studios were closed. A year later, Sierra was formally disestablished as a company and continued as a publishing brand of Vivendi; this was in result after Havas became part of that new company. In 2008, Sierra was closed after
Vivendi Games merged with
Activision Publishing to form Activision Blizzard, but in 2014, Sierra was later revived and will continue publishing some independently developed games, including the reboot of the
King's Quest series.
