Background

TV3 is former Irish independent channel, and began transmission on September 29, 1998. Originally owned by CanWest, in 2000 it was bought by Granada. It is well known for the large amounts of programming imported from Granada/ITV, leading its detractors to brand it "ITV Ireland". In recent years, however, it has increased the amount of local programmes such as Ireland AM (an Irish version of GMTV), The Apprentice, and more recently Come Dine With Me. On August 30, 2018, TV3 was renamed as Virgin Media One.

1st Logo (September 29, 1998-July 31, 2000)

Visuals: Several different everyday items/places (cameras, bubbles, roller coasters, dodgem cars, etc) are seen in several different angles and shots. On the final shot, the logo is formed: 2 teal curves "connected" to form an abstract 3 that thins out towards the top, and the screen blurs. The text "tvthree" then blurs in below, with "three" shooting out an afterimage as well.

Technique: CGI/computer generated logo.

Audio: Depends on the ident, but there's always a female voice saying "three" at the end.

Availability: Surviving captures of the idents can be found here.

4th ID (2006-2009)

Visuals: After one of the video clips in the 6 variants plays, there is a dot (color depends on the variant). Another dot appears, making the last one fade. Then, a white dot with the TV3 logo on it appears, which makes the background turn into the same color as the last two dots. We then see all three dots on the right of the screen, as the third dot releases white circles.

Variants:

  • Band: In a white room, there is a music group, three male, and one female. The female group member then walks up to the screen, and grabs a microphone and starts singing. The TV3 logo then appears.
  • City: There is a close up of a road, with a person walking on it. Then, the TV3 logo appears in white neon.
  • Karate: Over a red background, there is a woman wearing karate clothing doing a punch and kick. Then, she punches the screen, causing it to crack. Then, the TV3 logo appears.
  • Diving: On a pool background there is a diving plank. Then, there is a person walking on it and jumping before diving. The TV3 logo appears.
  • Birthday: There is a cake with lit candles and a woman. The woman blows the candles out 3 times. On the third time, we see her face, and she smiles during the applause. The TV3 logo then appears.
  • Horror: Same as the Band ID, but after a while, the female singer stops singing and starts talking. Then, one of the group members takes of his red electric guitar and pushes the singer with a mad expression on his face. He then hits the female singer with the guitar, which breaks it. The singer is then shown screaming, covering the side of her neck, which is spurting blood. Then, another one of the group members punches one of the group members in the face, which makes him back away from him, twitching, while his nose bleeds. Then, one of the group members unscrews his Hi-Hat and throws it to a group members face, which slices half of his head off. Then, one of the group members sits down and starts drumming with blood on the wall.

Trivia: The singer in the Band and Horror IDs is Kojii Helnwein, an Irish actress, musician, and model.

Technique: Live-action and 2D computer animation.

Audio: Depends on the ID.

Availability: The Horror ID was possibly used during the month of October.
