From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

Background

CBeebies is a British BBC channel aimed at children 3-6 years old, launched on February 11, 2002. It is CBBC's sister channel.

(February 11, 2002-March 14, 2023)

Dance (February 11, 2002-2013)

Visuals: On a blue CBeebies background, 2 yellow bugs dance around with each other and eventually hit each other. Then the background turns pink and then the logo appears above with the BBC logo fading in as the 2 bugs continue to dance.

Variants:

  • To promote the channel's Tweenies Fun Day marathon on Bank Holiday Monday in 2002, the titular characters are showing.
  • There's a shortened variant to promote Boo! in 2003, where a titular character waves to the viewer and then he turns to the BBC logo.

Technique: CGI from Lambie-Nairn.

Audio: Cheerful-sounding music with synths and a voice saying "CBeebies, CBeebies!" (which became as CBeebies' signature tune, alongside CBBC from 2002-2005) and a kid giggling (a stock sound effect nicknamed the "Diddy laugh") in the middle.

Legacy: Like the rest of CBeebies' idents, this is cute and very kid-friendly. Also, the yellow bugs were compared with the green bugs from CBBC between 2002 and 2005.

Shapes (February 11, 2002-2016)

Visuals: On an orange CBeebies background is the CBeebies logo (with the letters more spaced out). Then the BBC logo fades out and the CBeebies wordmark turns into 3 bugs, which become a circle, a square and a triangle. Then one of the shapes zooms in and we head into a continuity link or a plain coloured background.

Technique: Same as before.

Audio: Different-sounding CBeebies jingle, once again sounding cheerful, with the bugs making noise.

Holes (2002)

Visuals: On a green CBeebies background, 2 yellow bugs go in holes around the background. We slide to the CBeebies logo and one of the bugs go into the second "B".

Technique: Same as before.

Audio: Soft and cheerful-sounding CBeebies jingle and bug noises with a kid giggling in the middle.

Balance (February 11, 2002-2013)

Visuals: Various bugs balance on top of each other on a blue CBeebies background. The one on the very top balances the CBeebies logo by rocking it around.

Variants:

  • A shortened version exists, which only features the part with the bug balancing the logo.
  • To promote the channel's Tweenies Fun Day marathon on Bank Holiday Monday in 2002, the titular characters are showing.

Technique: Same as above.

Audio: Chime version of the CBeebies jingle and the bugs making noises.

Multiply (February 11, 2002-2016)

Visuals: On a green CBeebies background, one bug appears, until another one appears, then more of the bugs do the same thing, until they cover the background. Then they come out and the CBeebies logo is seen with the BBC logo fading in. Bugs appear randomly on the screen.

Technique: Same as before.

Audio: Gentle-sounding CBeebies jingle (similar to the "Shapes" ident, but some beats were absent), akin to other CBeebies idents and the bugs making noises.

Legacy: The bugs that "randomly" appear don't have a good disappear animation, leaving 1-4 frames out. This is pretty obvious it was done by a green screen.

Snowman (December 2002-December 2005)

Visuals: On a snowy light blue CBeebies background, 3 bugs form a snowman (the top with the eyes, and the others forming buttons for the snowman). Then they get hit by snowballs and dissolve by jumping to the camera, to become the CBeebies logo, as snow falls on top of it and covers it.

Technique: Same as before.

Audio: Same music as "Dance", but it's Christmas-themed with bug noises.

Availability: It was used as a Christmas ident from 2002 to 2005.

Christmas Tree (December 2002-December 2005, November 12, 2007, January 2, 2010)

Visuals: On a starry red CBeebies background, the 1st bug jumps into the scene while the other bugs jump on him. The middle blob gets a concussion and transforms into a Christmas tree. Then they merge and form the CBeebies logo like with the previous ident.

Technique: Same as before.

Audio: Same music from above, but it's more Christmassy with the bugs making noises.

Availability: Same as above. This was also used as the intro to the DVD CBeebies: The Ultimate Christmas Collection, and then it was surprisingly seen after Boogie Beebies on January 2, 2010.

Bedtime Hour (March 10, 2003-2016)

Visuals: On a purple/dark blue night-time CBeebies background with stars, there is a moon on the bottom right with three bugs sleeping on it. The CBeebies logo is seen on top. Then, a shooting star appears from the right to the middle as the logo for the "Bedtime Hour" (in the usual CBeebies font) fade in.

Variants:

  • An extended version exists. This version begins with a close-up of only one bug on the moon, and then two more jump onto it and fall asleep. One comes close to the camera and back as the moon moves to the bottom right and the rest of the ident plays like above.
    • On the DVD CBeebies: Bedtime, when the bug comes close to the camera and out, it comes out of the DVD menu instead.
  • A shorter version exists.
  • Sometimes, the "Bedtime Hour" text is absent.

Technique: CGI, produced by Red Bee Media.

Audio: Calm-sounding lullaby version of the CBeebies jingle and the bugs snoring.

Audio Variants:

  • The extended version uses the same music and then a synth sounder when the Bedtime Hour text appears. You can also hear the bugs making noise and yawning sounds.
  • On CBeebies Bedtime Stories until a proper ident was made for this strand, a different tune plays.

Availability: Same as above. It was used for CBeebies' Bedtime Hour strand up until 2016, where specially-made CBeebies House idents were made to replace it. It was also used as the intro to the DVD CBeebies: Bedtime.

Legacy: This has been the longest-serving ident ever used on CBeebies, used for over 13 years and by then, was the 3rd ident for the channel produced by Lambie-Nairn to still be in use at the time.

Slide (2004)

Visuals: On a pink CBeebies background the screen zooms out and see the bugs sliding. As one of them slips into the screen, its mouth reveals the start of a continuity link.

Technique: Same as before.

Audio: The CBeebies jingle, with the bouncing and the bugs laughing as they are sliding.

Availability: Same as above.

Animals (2006-2016)

Visuals: On a light blue CBeebies background, various bugs form animals like a pig, an elephant, a cow and a chicken. Some of the bugs splodge together into the CBeebies logo which appears on the top, while three bugs remain on the bottom.

Technique: Same as before.

Audio: Bug sounds and animal sounds, such as a pig oinking, an elephant trumpeting, a cow mooing, and a chicken clucking.

Dance Lights (2006-March 14, 2023)

Visuals: On a pink CBeebies background, three bugs make sounds using the background drawings, which then glow when they hit them. Eventually, they make the usual CBeebies tune as the logo appears letter by letter.

Variant: A shortened version exists.

Technique: Same as before.

Audio: Different sounds are produced by the bugs, ending with a version of the CBeebies jingle, and sometimes ending with a low-pitched boom.

Availability:

  • By the 2010's, this ident still normally appeared around the 6am hour, but usually isn't their own ident; it's normally used as a Day Of The Week ident. The time that this ident appears can be rarely 7am or 8am. It's normally seen against the following shows that are currently airing since this was written: Chuggington, Timmy Time, Octonauts, it doesn't really matter.

Paint (2006-2016 (UK), 2008-present (Asia/Australia/New Zealand))

Visuals: On a light blue CBeebies background, paint appears all over the background and eventually hitting some bugs which appear in this ident. The paint then slides away to reveal the CBeebies logo, while the bugs are still covered in paint.

Variants:

  • A shortened version of the ident exists.
  • To celebrate Holi in India, the purple text saying "Happy Holi" appeared above.

Technique: Same as before.

Audio: A remix version of the CBeebies jingle with bug sounds and splatting sounds.

Availability:

  • This ident is still being used for the Asian and Australian/New Zealand CBeebies networks as of 2021.

Flower (2006-2016 (UK), 2008-present (Internationally))

Visuals: On a green CBeebies background, there is an orange flower. Then a bug pops out of it, which then reveals to be a whole screen of flowers with bugs popping out of them. The CBeebies logo appears above.

Technique: Same as before.

Audio: The bugs popping out of the flowers and the usual "CBeebies! CBeebies!" soundbyte with drums.

Availability:

  • It used to be shown whenever you watched a CBeebies program on BBC iPlayer until around 2010. It was also used as the intro to the DVD CBeebies: The Ultimate Summer Collection.
  • The ident is still being used internationally, eg, on CBeebies Turkey.

Share the Magic (December 2006-December 2009)

Visuals: On a dark blue CBeebies background with hills, a yellow bug pops up with a star on its head. Then, a bug slides down and hits the one with the star, representing they are sharing their stars. Then, a third one appears and does the same thing. The one that slid down then slides down the hilly side again alongside a few other bugs with stars on them to the CBeebies logo. Pictures of stars and Christmas trees surround the logo as one of the bugs slides down with the star heading into a continuity link or a coloured background.

Technique: Same as before.

Audio: Christmassy version of the CBeebies jingle, sometimes with a child saying "CBeebies, share the magic!" at the end.

Availability: Appeared whenever the CBeebies on BBC Two block finished for the day, as well as on the CBeebies channel.

Get Set Go! (March 19, 2007-2012)

The sun is then revealed to be a bug, who then uses toothpaste and a toothbrush to quickly brush its teeth, and gives a huge grin before quickly rushing away as dust clouds circle on the "Get Set Go" logo, which the camera zooms into.
