Atari Games (1984-1994)

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

Background

In 1984, the original Atari, Inc. was split into two divisions, Atari Games and Atari Corporation. The former consisted of Atari's arcade game business and was retained by Warner Communications. In 1987, it launched a subsidiary Tengen to produce home console and computer games, and spawned a lawsuit dispute with Nintendo over the rights of Tetris. The company spawned various successes throughout the 1980s and the 1990s. In 1994, this, along with the Tengen unit became part of Time Warner Interactive, and the Atari Games name and logo was relegated to being shown on flyers, before WMS bought out the studio in 1996.

Visuals: On a black background, there is the Atari tripod logo, with "GAMES" shown below in spaced-out letters.

Variants:

  • On the arcade game of Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters, the blue logo, without "GAMES" is shown on the title screen.
  • On the arcade games of Hydra and Klax, the logo is within the game's title screen.
  • On the arcade games of Rampart, the logo is on a brick wall over a blue light.
  • On the arcade games of Pit-Fighter, when completing a game, and both the arcade and 32X games of T-Mek, the logo is in stone.
  • On the arcade game of ThunderJaws, the word "PRESENTS" is shown below and it was placed on the top left of the opening cinematic.
  • On the arcade games of Road Riot 4WD and Batman, the logo is in gold.
  • On games released in 1992, like Moto Frenzy, the metallic gold Atari logo has a ring with the word "20 Years", which spins around to reveal "1972-1992". The "GAMES" text was also in blue.
  • On the arcade game of Space Lords, the 20th Anniversary logo is used, but the ring is still and moves up and down.
  • On the arcade game of Off the Wall, the logo is made of scribbling.
  • On the arcade game of Steel Talons, the 3D logo in gold flies in from the screen.
  • On the unfinished arcade game of Hard Drivin's Airborne, the 3D logo flies in and slides over.
