Background

Discovery Channel Video was the home video imprint of Discovery Networks (later Discovery, Inc.) that released Discovery Channel programs on home video. This later expanded to include Animal Planet and TLC as well, both under their own imprints.

In 1999, Discovery Networks entered into a four-year domestic partnership with Artisan Entertainment. Discovery also entered into partnerships with other distributors around the world as well. After the deal expired and after Artisan was purchased by Lions Gate Films, Discovery resumed distributing their own releases until entering into a new distribution deal with Image Entertainment in 2006.

1st Logo (early 1990s-1994)

Visuals: There is two boxes (one that is all stony, the other blue), the 1985 Discovery Channel logo, and the text "VIDEO LIBRARY" form up. Once they do, the sun rises on the Discovery logo.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A shorter version of the tribal tune from the Discovery Networks logo.

Availability: Appears on VHS tapes released under The Discovery Channel Video Library.

2nd Logo (1994-2002)

Visuals: The animation bears a few similiarities with the 1st Discovery Networks logo, but the text "EXPLORE YOUR WORLD" is seen in spaced-out letters atop "Discovery". There is no video indicator, though.

Variant: Prior to 1995, "THE Discovery CHANNEL" replaced "Discovery CHANNEL".

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A different arrangement of the Discovery Networks theme.

Availability: Appears on Discovery Channel-branded VHS and DVD releases from Artisan Entertainment/Family Home Entertainment.
