Background

Intermedia Films was a British-American film production company that was founded in London, England as Intermedia Film Equities in 1991. Originally formed as a film financer, it was reorganized as a film producer in 1997, operating in Los Angeles, California, with films being funded through the German company IMF (Internationale Medien und Film). In March 2001, Intermedia acquired Largo Entertainment's film library[1] after that company was shut down by JVC two years prior. It also served as a international backer for C2 Pictures[2], co-producing Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Basic Instinct 2. After the box office failures of Basic Instinct 2 and RV, Intermedia went dormant in 2006. In April of the following year, Stuart Ford founded IM Global as a successor to the company. As of 2012, InterMedia's library was owned by Ron Tutor and David Bergstein.

1st Logo (September 5, 1998-February 7, 2003)

Visuals: On a moving blue light, many particles move towards the camera, turn around and form the word "Intermedia" in a computerized font. The blue lightspot freezes behind the name, then everything fades out.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: None.

Availability: Appears on films from the era, such as Hilary and Jackie, Iris, Playing by Heart, The Wedding Planner, and K-PAX, among others.

2nd Logo (December 6, 2002-April 28, 2006)

Visuals: Against a cloudy sky, a huge rogue wave rises up for a few moments, then crashes directly into the camera. After this, the camera pans up out of the water as the large chrome letters "INT" rise out of it. The camera zooms out to reveal the company name "INTERMEDIA" now above the water, and a curved line shoots underneath the text. The background then changes to black and a thick, blue line appears behind the text.

Trivia: Brandon Davis, an Uncharted Territory staff member and the main animator for the logo, made a blog post describing the process of animating it, which can be read here. The logo was primarily made using 3ds Max 5 with Afterburn and Dreamscape, alongside Next Limit Realflow and Adobe After Effects. Intermedia had originally planned to shooting the logo with live-action effects, but this proved expensive and impractical.

Variants:

  • On the Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines game for the Game Boy Advance, the Intermedia print logo is seen in a dark blue box on a white background.
  • An in-credit logo is seen at the end of Basic Instinct 2 and RV. The latter has the colors inverted.

Technique: CGI by Uncharted Territory.

Audio: The sounds of the rogue wave and water and finally a phased synth boom.

Availability:

  • Appears on films such as Basic (the first film to use this logo), Alexander, Mindhunters, Adaptation (original prints only), and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.
  • This replaces the Largo Entertainment logo on said company's films released in double feature DVDs by Warner Home Video, due to Intermedia owning worldwide rights to Largo's library with Warner Bros. Pictures handling distribution.
  • The print version appears on the Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines video game for the Game Boy Advance.
