Background

When Phillip Mandelker, who was partners with Leonard Hill, died in 1984, the company was renamed to Leonard-Hill Films. Robert O'Connor joined the company in 1986 as a partnership and launched Hill/O'Connor Television, but the venture split two years later. In 1989, it was the founding partners of ACI to distribute television movies. In 1993, it was merged with Joel Fields Productions to form Hill/Fields Entertainment to continue producing made for television movies; Fields left in 1998, and Hill reverted the company back to its old name to produce one more television movie before switching to real estate development.

Logo (September 16, 1985-March 1, 1993; January 26, 2000)

Visuals: On a black or blue background, a yellow line shoots down, then curves to form a fancy-looking lowercase "h". Then, rainbow streaks shoot out to the left and the right at the same time, then flash once they form "len hill" colored like a rainbow. Below that, "LEONARD HILL FILMS" appears, between two white lines.

Variants:

  • A warp speed version was spotted on Rags to Riches and The Insiders.
  • On Mirrors, the streaks are a bit simpler.

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: A "whoosh" when the "h" is formed, then a dramatic synthesizer tune that's composed by J. Peter Robinson. The early version has a flute and harp tune from Craig Safan.

Audio Variants:

  • On The Insiders, no music is heard.
  • On Rags to Riches, the music is sped-up and the tail end trails off to the New World Television logo.
  • CBS airings of Stolen from the Heart used a generic theme.

Availability: Seen on a few made-for-TV movies in the 1980's, as well as the 1987 television series Rags to Riches and the short-lived The Insiders. The logo would be revived one last time for Hill's final TV film, Stolen from the Heart. The early variant was seen at the end of the 1985 TV movie Mirrors on NBC, but the logo was cut from Multicom's prints.
