Background

Black Bear Pictures is a media company founded by film producer and former corporate lawyer Teddy Schwarzman in 2011, who left Cinetic Media to form his own company. Black Bear is known for developing, producing and financing original content for film and television. Most of its films have premiered at festivals such as TIFF, Cannes and Venice, among others. The company did not use a logo until the following year.

Logo (August 30, 2012-)


Visuals: The screen fades into a snow-covered New York City street at night. A small cinnamon black bear walks in the middle of the pathway as the camera pulls back to reveal a window inside a house, in which a small boy from the back view, wearing a red shirt runs to. The bear then turns his head to look at the boy, and continues walking shortly afterward. The picture then zooms out in an iris-out-like effect, as it reveals a large "B" in white with half of the bear's silhouette shown inside, blurring in against a black background. As it continues to zoom out and slowly sharpen in the process, the company name in white wipes in from the bottom with a line separating the words, with a "glow" like effect shown around the entire logo. The logo continues to zoom out further until it slowly comes to a stop.

Variants:

  • Sometimes, the print version of the logo is used, which is also shown vertically.
    • All is Lost has it scrolling up with various other logos in the credits.
  • On Ben is Back, the live-action half is cut.
  • On The Operative, the logo is seen cropped in a box.
  • On Gold, the logo has a bluish tint.
  • On Suburbicon, the logo appears customised alongside the other logos for the film, with the name in a different font and has "presents" below it in a script font.
  • Starting in 2023 with Dumb Money, the final product is different. Here, the "B" moves to the left as "LACK BEAR" in a Poppins font blurs in next to it. Also, the word "PICTURES" is absent, making this the first time the "PICTURES" text is absent.

Technique: Mostly live-action, designed by PROLOGUE. According to them, the bear was shot against green screen and digitally composited onto the street, while the footage of the boy running to the window was filmed separately.

Audio: It begins off with ambience-like sounds, followed by the bear growling, and as it zooms out, a faint "ding" noise is heard (if one listens closely), ending with wind-like sounds. Sometimes, it is silent or has the opening theme of the movie.

Availability: Seen on films produced by the company such as At Any Price (the first film to use this logo), Broken City, A.C.O.D., All is Lost, The Imitation Game, The Happytime Murders, and The Operative, among others.
