Harvey Levin Productions

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

Background

This is the production company of Harvey Levin, a television producer, legal analyst, celebrity reporter, and former lawyer. He is also the founder of celebrity news website TMZ, which was launched on November 8, 2005. On September 13, 2021, WarnerMedia (now known as Warner Bros. Discovery) sold TMZ to Fox Corporation (itself a spinoff of divested news assets made by the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company).

1st Logo (September 2, 2002-May 7?, 2008)

Visuals: Against a smoky gray-tan background with curve-like patterns, there is a tan-colored scale of justice in a square frame balanced in the center. The text "HARVEY LEVIN PRODUCTIONS", in a bold serif font is shown below.

Variant: On TMZ on TV, the logo is squished. Black bars are on the top and bottom of the screen as well.

Technique: A still, digital graphic.

Audio: A six-note pizzicato string tune (composed by Norman Arnold), or the closing theme of the show.

Availability: Seen on episodes of Celebrity Justice and episodes of TMZ on TV from the period.

2nd Logo (May 8?, 2008-)

Visuals: There is the company name arranged on a black slate, with the "N" in "LEVIN" being arranged by a hand, placing last. The camera then zooms out to show that it is being held by a black-and-white photo of Levin, showing that he is a prison inmate (a bottle of alcohol is in his right hand, as well). He exclaims "I'm a lawyer!" (made famous by Star Jones Reynolds, former host of The View and current judge of Divorce Court), and his picture is taken.

Variants:

  • A still version exists.
  • Another version exists where it only shows the first half.
  • A warp-speed version exists.
  • In one 2012 TMZ on TV episode, Levin instead says "I'm gay!" (utilizing a soundbite from the episode proper). A rainbow also forms behind him.
  • An earlier episode has Star Jones herself in place of Levin, saying the line in her voice.
  • On the September 21, 2009 episode of TMZ on TV, Levin says "I'm a pescatarian!" instead.
  • On the November 12, 2013 episode of TMZ on TV, Levin says "WHAAAAAAAATTTT?!?" instead.
  • On episodes of TMZ on TV starting in 2020, the logo is part of the show's split-screen credits.
  • A slightly shortened version exists on Famous in 12.

Technique: 2D animation similar to Flash animations on JibJab.com.

Audio: The same music from before, followed by Levin saying his phrase and a camera flash.

Audio Variants:

  • Sometimes, the closing theme plays over.
  • On Famous in 12, only two notes of the music are heard.

Availability: Seen on more recent episodes of TMZ on TV (it is still used on that show), as well as some TMZ specials. Also seen on Raq Rants and Famous in 12.

3rd Logo (August 24, 2022-)

Visuals: There is the text "HARVEY LEVIN" in a white-light blue gradient wrapped in an arc with "PRODUCTIONS" below that, spinning away from the camera in a 3D anaglyph against a dark blue background with particles, as a reflection of the text is seen below. As the logo slowly zooms away, the text shines from left to right with the anaglyph following through, as the text then fully turns white.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A weird futuristic-like echoing sound, followed by a reverse synth note and a loud thud.

Availability: It debuted on TMZ: No BS, and later seen on TMZ Presents: Megan vs. Troy: What REALLY Went Down and other TMZ specials.
