Background

Island of Misfits is a company originally known as the Halifax Film Company that was founded by former Salter Street Films executives Michael Donovan and Charles Bishop in 2004. In 2006, Halifax Film merged with Decode Entertainment to form DHX Media. The two companies continued until September 2010, when all divisions of DHX were renamed to their parent company's name. In November 2018, as part of a series of restructurations within the company, DHX sold its Halifax animation studio to IoM Media Ventures, a company led by former DHX CEO Dana Landry.

Halifax Film Company

(2005-2007)

Logo: On a water background, the text "halifax film company" fades in.

Variants:

  • On post-2007 reruns of Season 1 of Poko, a DHX Media byline appeared below the text.
  • Sometimes the word "company" is removed.
  • On Lunar Jim, an in-credit version is seen.
  • On This Hour Has 22 Minutes, a copyright notice appears under the logo.

FX/SFX: The rippling water and text. Simple CGI animation.

Music/Sounds: The closing theme to the show, or the first three notes of the piano piece "Clair de Lune", originally composed by Claude Debussy.

Availability: Appeared on all Halifax Film shows from this era, including This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Poko and Lunar Jim. These days, it's become much harder to find as their output hasn't been reran lately.

Halifax Film

(September 3, 2007-November 29, 2011)

Logo: On a black background, the text "halifaxfilm" with the line on the middle and the DHX Media byline below it zooms in.

FX/SFX: The zooming of the text.

Music/Sounds: A 7-note dramatic orchestral fanfare or the ending theme of the show.

Availability: Common. Intact on their TV shows even after the merger, such as The Mighty Jungle, Bo on the Go!, Animal Mechanicals, and Pirates: Adventures in Art, all of which were on CBC. Like the previous logo, it's also become much harder to find as their output hasn't been reran lately.

Island of Misfits

(2020?-)

Logo: In a beach setting, a purple wooden box lays on some sand. The box shakes abruptly and rapidly while lights glow on the box. The lights then form the letters "i" and "m" on the box (bearing a striking resemblance to HIT Entertainment) while the letters let out some lights. Then the box drops and a metal spring containing a purple joker's hat with some bells pops out from the top of the box like a surprise box out of an "O" and "Island of Misfits" fades in next to it with "IoM Media Ventures Inc." in the same font fading in before fading out.

Variant: A in-credit version exists, where it's in print form, the spring does not connect to the box, and the bells are replaced with simple detail circles.

FX/SFX: Well-done CGI animation, a surprising and creative update to the last logo.

Music/Sounds: A metal drone sound, with a screeching sound and sounds of shaking, followed by a 'pop' noise and a 5-note ukulele tune. The in-credit version has the closing theme instead.

Availability: Current. It was first seen on newer seasons of Charlie's Colorforms City on Netflix, plastering the DHX Media logo, and Season 28 of This Hour Has 22 Minutes. The in-credit version so far was seen on the Caillou reboot. Will likely be used in tandem with the DHX logo for newer Halifax Film productions.
