Background

The Whoniverse is the official banner comprising of all content produced within or pertaining to the universe of Doctor Who, a long running sci-fi franchise created by Sydney Newman and Verity Lambert for the BBC in 1963. The Whoniverse brand was launched in 2023 by returning Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies.

(1 November 2023-)

Visuals: A 3D model of the word "WHO" is shown, one letter at a time:

  • The "W" contains clips of the First, Third, Fourth, Tenth and Thirteenth Doctors as well as a still of the Fifteenth Doctor.
  • The "H" contains Gwen Cooper from Doctor Who spinoff, Torchwood, as well as companions Susan Foreman, Jo Grant, Sarah Jane Smith (albeit in a clip from her spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures, rather than the show proper), Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Amy Pond and Ruby Sunday (as a still image)
  • The "O" contains monsters and villains such as the Daleks, The Master (in their "Missy" incarnation), a Weeping Angel, Cybermen, a Sea Devil, the Bane Mother (from The Sarah Jane Adventures) and a male Leaf Dragon (from the spinoff Class)

Finally, the O rotates to reveal a gold texture as the remaining letters settle into place and are then accompanied by the letters "iverse" to form the complete title. The word glows with regeneration energy and the TARDIS flies across the screen as the BBC logo appears above via its usual animation.

Trivia: Russell T. Davies, the current showrunner of Doctor Who, has indicated that he would like to update the ident with new characters as time goes on, similar to how the Marvel Studios logo adds and removes clips every so often.[1]

Variant: A short version exists.

Technique: A mixture of CGI and live action clips from both classic and new Doctor Who as well as its spinoffs, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and Class.

Audio: A triumphant, building fanfare composed by Murray Gold.[1]

Availability: It debuted on the official Doctor Who YouTube channel on 1 November 2023. It is now seen on all new Doctor Who related content, including episodes of the show proper from "The Star Beast" onwards, albeit on BBC airings and iPlayer versions only - international releases on Disney+ omit this ident, opening with the Disney+ Originals logo instead. This has also been seen on Tales of the TARDIS, the 2023 re-release of An Adventure in Space and Time, Doctor Who: Unleashed and Talking Doctor Who so far.
