Sony Pictures Animation/Logo Variations

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

These are the logo variations seen throughout the years by Sony Pictures Animation, with more to be added overtime.

Surf's Up (2007):

  • A flock of snowflakes fly by and reveal the completed logo, which is frozen and covered in snow.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009):

  • The logo is already formed and is still on a black background.

The Smurfs franchise:

  • The Smurfs (2011): The logo is still on a white background. Also seen on the trailer. It also the last movie to use the 2006 logo.
  • The Smurfs 2 (2013): After the logo is complete, a white Smurf hat falls down onto the first "A" in "Animation".

Hotel Transylvania series:

  • Hotel Transylvania (2012) and Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015): After the logo is complete, it's surrounded by mist, segueing into the opening of the movie. The former title is the first one to use the animated variant of the 2012 logo.
  • Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (2022): Transitioning from the Columbia variant on a white background, Tinkles (from the franchise) runs into the frame as he comes closer to the camera, holding onto the Sony Pictures Animation logo in his mouth. He then drops the text (colored in red, similar to The Angry Birds Movie 2 variant) as it positions itself, and Tinkles runs off-screen as we see the logo for a few more seconds. It is also worth noting that this is the only film in the Hotel Transylvania franchise to use the 2018 logo.

Open Season: Scared Silly (2015):

  • The 2011 logo is black-and-white and appears from a flash of thunder.

Spider-Verse films:

  • Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018): The first movie with the current logo. The prototype version (with a darker background and bluer name) of the logo glitches. Like the standard logo, this was made by Devastudios.
  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023): Very similar to the first film's variant, but the normal logo is used (the background is still black, however) and it glitches differently. After a few seconds, the logo quickly backs away to make way for the Pascal Pictures logo. Just like the first film, this was done by Devastudios.
  • The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story (2023, short): The normal logo with the black background from the previous is used, except that it completely glitches throughout the logo animation. When the logo is formed, a few portions of the logo glitches. And when the logo flickers out, it completely glitches again.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019):

  • For some reason, Sony Pictures Animation worked on the sequel but not the first movie. Nevertheless, this film does have a custom variant. After the screen zooms through the Sony logo, there is a blue gradient background with red feathers scattered across the floor. Suddenly, a red version of the Sony Pictures Animation logo falls down, causing the screen to shake briefly and the feathers are sent into the air, before descending slowly until one covers up the screen and transitions to black, before the Rovio Animation logo plays.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021, Netflix):

  • The logo illuminates on a blue background of doodles of the characters, before exploding outward and becoming "Katie-visioned" in 2D with multiple sockpuppets and animated characters around the logo.

Vivo (2021, Netflix):

  • Transitioning from the Columbia variant on a multicolored retro-like city is the Sony Pictures Animation text drop down and position itself, as the logo becomes full color on a black background. Then the screen zooms in and transition into the second "A" in "ANIMATION", seguing into the opening sequence. Just like the prototype version of the logo, the text is bluer.

Agent Elvis (2023, Netflix):

  • The logo is red (similar to The Angry Birds Movie 2 and Hotel Transylvania: Transformania variants) with a slight anaglyph effect on a black background, and "ANIMATION" appears as a dotted outline. It animates like the standard logo, and once it's complete, a reflection can be seen below it.
