Background

Perfect World Pictures (also known as PWPIC) is a Chinese entertainment company. Founded in 2008, it engages in the production, distribution and marketing of film and television content, content related advertising, merchandising business, talent management business as well as investment.

At the start of 2016, Perfect World announced a long term co-financing deal with Universal Pictures, which represents the first time a Chinese company has directly invested in a multi-year slate deal with a major U.S. studio.

Logo (2008-)

Visuals: In an arctic scene at nighttime with an iceberg in the background, the screen zooms into the water where we see a whale swimming. It then cuts back to the iceberg where the whale jumps out of the water and falls back in. A Chinese translation of the name appears above the iceberg, followed by an English translation appearing in place.

Later Variants:

  • The first later variant goes the same as the logo described above, but its enhanced and the company name is smaller and atop its large Chinese translation.
  • The second later variant goes the same as the first later variant of the logo described above, but the iceberg is now replaced by a canyon cliff. The sky is also brighter and the company name is in gold.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A calm piano tune, accompanied by sounds of the whale and the water.

Availability: Seen on their films produced in China, some examples including Sophie's Revenge and Love Is Not Blind.

North American logos

1st Logo (2014-December 27, 2018)

Visuals: The screen zooms up from a snowy ground to see a daughter helping her father onto a rock during a snowfall. Just as the father steps on to the rock, it stops snowing and the sun begins to rise. The camera also pans up to a panoramic view of a mountain landscape. The company name (which might either fade in or flip in letter-by-letter depending on the film) appears above the duo and the girl points to the landscape, as a flock of birds passes the clouds at the top-right.

Variants:

  • Sometimes, the company name appears brighter.
  • There is a still version of the logo, which is more common than the animated version.
  • On some prints of Central Intelligence, a Chinese translation of the company name fades in along with the English translation.
  • Some films may have the logo start at the sun rise.

Technique: CGI done by Picturemill.

Audio: It starts off with a calm two-note clarinet tune and then builds up to a dramatic orchestral climax. Composed by Jim Goodwin.

Audio Variants:

  • On films that use the variant where the logo starts at the sun rise, it just uses the orchestral climax.
  • For the still version, it's either silence or the last two notes of the fanfare.

Availability: Seen on films produced by Comcast starting with The Huntsman: Winter's War and ending with Girls Trip. Made a surprise appearance on a Chinese film called A City Called Macau, released on December 27, 2018 in Hong Kong.

2nd Logo (2017- )

Visuals: On a black background, an orange light dims in to reveal the father and daughter from before. A star appears at the top-right next to the light as the daughter points at it and the words "PERFECT WORLD" flip in letter-by-letter. The word "PICTURES" then fades in below.

Variants:

  • Some prints of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom feature a Chinese translation of the company name above the English text, and the logo appears at the beginning of the film instead of the end.
  • On First Man, only the company name appears.
  • On The Northman (2022), only the company name again appears, but is in print form and smaller.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Either the opening theme of the movie, silence, or the first five notes of the climax of the previous logo's fanfare.

Availability: Same as before, starting with the 2017 remake of The Mummy. Briefly used in tandem with the previous logo.
