Paul Haggis Productions

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

Background

This was the vanity card of Paul Haggis, the creator of City, You Take the Kids and EZ Streets and the co-creator of Family Law.

1st Logo (January 29, 1990-January 12, 1991)

Visuals: Over a white background, there is the red text "P A U L H A G G I S" in a Copperplate font. A pencil then draws the text "Productions" in black.

Technique: Live-action.

Audio: The ending theme of the show.

Availability: Seen on the short-lived shows City and You Take the Kids.

2nd Logo (October 27, 1996-March 20, 2000)

Visuals: On a sky background, there is the text "PAUL HAGGIS Productions" in the middle of the screen. The "PAUL HAGGIS" text is sandwiched between two lines. "Productions" is underneath the bottom line. In the upper left corner, there is a sun shining. In the background, clouds are moving. A man wearing a cloth robe and bird wings on his arms falls from the sky, panicking. As he falls out-of-frame, feathers fly off of his arms, continuing to gently fall for the duration.

Trivia: The falling man in this logo is actually Icarus, a figure in Greek mythology who built wings out of wax and tried to fly to the sun, only to fall into the sea.

Technique: A mix of 2D animation and live-action.

Audio: Depends on the show:

  • On EZ Streets, the closing theme of the show is heard alongside a man yelling in an unconvincing manner.
  • On Family Law, the soundbite is more dramatic and there is no closing theme. Depending on the episode, the scream would either trail off into the 1995 Columbia TriStar Television logo (on "Pilot") or the 1997 CBS Productions logo (starting with "Damages").
  • Original CBS airings run a Late Night with David Letterman promo over the logos.

Availability:

  • Seen on EZ Streets, a few episodes of which are also available on DVD.
  • It was also seen on season 1 episodes of Family Law on Start TV (from "Pilot" to "Playing God").

3rd Logo (April 17, 2000-May 27, 2002)

Visuals: On a blue sky background with a sun in the center, Icarus is seen flying towards the sun. When he's somewhat near it, his "wings" fall apart, causing him to do a back flip and then spiral face-first toward the viewer until the logo cuts away. During all this, "PAUL HAGGIS" is seen underneath the sun and "PRODUCTIONS", which is spaced out, is seen below "PAUL HAGGIS", which is separated by a line.

Technique: CGI.

Audio:

  • When it was first used, the logo used the Family Law soundbite from the 1st logo. This was only seen on the episode "The Witness".
  • Starting with the episode "Second Chance", a different, more fitting soundbite (provided by the man who did the EZ Streets variant) was used. This consists of Icarus going "Uh, oh, WAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"; this also trails off into the 1997 CBS Productions logo.
  • Starting with "One Mistake", the flapping of Icarus's "wings" can also be heard. Also, the pitch of Icarus's scream is in a noticeably lower pitch.
  • Original CBS airings run promos for Late Night with David Letterman over the logo.

Availability:

  • Can be seen on Family Law on Start TV (starting with "The Witness").
  • It also plasters the previous logo on 16:9 prints of season 1 episodes.
