Background

Golden Princess Amusement Co. Ltd. was a Hong Kong film distributor established in the late 1970s. It distributed Western films and ran a circuit of theaters located at main streets of Hong Kong. In 1980s, they began to distribute Chinese films, having invested in HK film companies such as Cinema City, Always Good and Magnum. They later set up a production company, Golden Princess Film Production. Becuase of the decline of the HK film industry in the mid 90's (with factors including digital piracy and rise of ticket prices), Golden Princess was struggling to keep up. They sold off their cinemas to Newport, and they shut down later in 1995, alongside the production company.

Logo (1980s-1992)

Visuals: Over a starry space background, a glowing "GP" shaped object zooms towards the camera. Then the object stops zooming and dims its glowing, and the words "GOLDEN PRINCESS AMUSEMENT CO. LTD.", with "PRESENTS" below, zooms in below. Finally, the Cantonese text "金公主娛樂有限公司" zooms out while the starry space continues to sparkle.

Trivia: This logo shares the same template with the Hwang Jang Lee Production Company and Vikings Film (H.K.) Ltd. logos.

Technique: Camera-controlled animation.

Audio: Starts with a drumroll, followed by a loud, bombastic, suspenseful horn fanfare ("Breakout No. 9" by Jack Trombey from the De Wolfe Music Library).

Audio Trivia: The stock fanfare was also used in Monty Python & the Quest for the Holy Grail (a 1996 adventure game by 7th Level, based on the 1975 UK film Monty Python and the Holy Grail at when you finally get the Holy Grail), as well as Mushroom Pictures' first logo.

Availability: It was originally used as a cinema trailer and was seen before the "Coming Attraction" trailers.

  • As a film distributor, it was seen on films such as The Raid, The Royal Scoundrel and strangely at the end of Angel Hunter and some prints of School on Fire.
  • It is retained on the Mei Ah DVD of the former film before the 3rd Cinema City Co. logo.
  • It is also retained on a laserdisc of the aforementioned School on Fire and on an HK DVD of The Royal Scoundrel.
