Background

Canal Uno is the first Colombian free-to-air television channel. It signed on June 13, 1954 and was the only Colombian television channel until 1966, when TV9-TeleBogotá signed on. It became "Primera Cadena" in 1972 (after the conversion of Tele 9 Corazón into Segunda Cadena) and then "Inravisión Cadena Uno" in the 1980s. In 1992, Inravisión split the programadora system to allow up to 14 companies: 10 regular companies (the state-owned Audiovisuales, Programar Televisión, Caracol, RTI Colombia, Tevecine, Proyectamos Televisión, Jorge Barón Televisión, Nuevos Días Televisión, Universal Televisión and Producciones Cinevisión), 6 news companies (Prego (for Noticiero Nacional), Datos y Mensajes (for Noticiero TV Hoy), NTC Televisión (for NTC Noticias) and CMI Televisión (for Noticiero CMI) and 24 Horas) and 4 companies specialized in seasonal programming (Producciones Bernardo Romero Perreiro, CTV, Provideo and Intercontinental) to provide content for each channel. As a result, the channel began simply identifying as "Cadena Uno" until 1998, when it changed to its current name as a result of a new tender (consisting of Audiovisuales, Caracol (until July 1998, when it launched their own television channel), Jorge Barón Televisión, Cenpro Televisión, CM& Televisión, Colombiana de Television, Producciones JES, NTC, RTI, Producciones Bernardo Romero Perreiro, Programar Televisión, PUNCH, Tevecine and UNI TV). In 2017, the ANTV authorized Plural Comunicaciones SAS (a consortium led by Hemisphere Media Group, NTC, RTI Producciones and CM&) to operate the channel, ending 63 years of full state control and becoming a privately-controlled channel, but its frequencies and equipment remained in the hands of the Colombian government. This led to a major programming change for Canal Uno. In 2022, Phoenix Media purchased Plural from HMTV1 and its controllers.

Note:

  • Before 1992, the Inravisión nationwide channels (1, 2 and 3) used the standard Inravisión idents.
