As a production company

Background

This is the production arm of the Scottish division of the BBC, BBC Scotland.

1st Logo (1988-1992)

Visuals: Same as the 1988 BBC Productions logo but with "SCOTLAND" added after the 1988 BBC logo.

Variant: On 1988 episodes of Open to Question, the notice is in orange and features the 1971 BBC logo.

Technique: A still, computerized graphic.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability: Only known to have been seen on episodes of Open to Question from this period.

2nd Logo (October 1, 1989)

Visuals: On a gray-dark gray background made up of horizontal bars, there is a vertical white box in the center containing a blue circle and a stylized shape of Scotland. Underneath it is the stacked text "BBC SCOTLAND PRODUCTION" and the copyright year underneath the box.

Technique: A still, computerized graphic.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability: Its only known appearance was on Francie & Josie: Live from the King's Theatre, Glasgow, which has this logo intact on its BBC Video release.

3rd Logo (March 15, 1993-January 23, 1998)

Visuals: The 1988 BBC logo is next to a white circle consisting of three thick dashed lines forming a stylized shape of Scotland. Underneath it all is "SCOTLAND" and a copyright notice underneath.

Variants:

  • Sometimes, the logo is black.
  • On The Shamen: Excess Is Not Enough, the logo has a black shadow effect.
  • On Mr. Wymi, the logo is yellow.
  • On Gasman, the font for the logo is different, resembling a normal typeface.

Technique: A still, computerized graphic.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability:

  • Should be saved on programmes from this period, although not on the same scale as the main BBC division.
  • It first appeared on The Shamen: Excess Is Not Enough and last appeared on the Looking After Jo Jo series.
  • The first series of Mr. Wymi and series 3-6 of Rab C. Nesbitt are some more shows that has this logo intact.

4th Logo (January 12, 1998-February 2009)

Visuals: Has the same behaviour as the 1st logo where the word "Scotland" is added after the 1997 BBC logo.

Variants:

  • As with the BBC Productions logo, it may be superimposed into the end credits.
    • Likewise, the logo may also be black when against colored backgrounds of high contrast.
  • Sometimes, the logo is shown within the copyright notice where it sits next to the copyright year in Roman numerals.
  • On some shows, "Scotland" is slightly bolded.
  • On Monarch of the Glen, "Scotland" is in a serif font.
  • On Hogmanay specials, the text "Happy New Year from" is shown above the logo.
  • On series 3 of BBC Coast, the text "Co-production" is shown underneath this and The Open University logos.
  • On A History of Scotland, the logo is stacked with "Scotland" appearing below the 1997 BBC logo.

Audio: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability: Seen on a variety of fictional, non-fictional, and non-scripted shows over the course of a decade.

  • Most shows produced by The Comedy Unit include this logo, including later series of Rab C. Nesbitt, Still Game, Only an Excuse, among others.
  • Programmes that has the logo by itself include the failed pilot to Phoo Action, The Double Life of Saki, Stephen Fry: HIV & Me, among many more.

5th Logo (February 25, 2009-)

Visuals: A stylized, silver shape of Scotland, consisting of three outlined bars, rotates in. In the middle of this sequence, the logo from before fades in underneath.

Variants:

  • Like the previous logo, it may be superimposed into the end credits or against a custom background.
  • In rare instances, on genre-specific programmes, the text "Drama Production" or "Science Production" may be added underneath the logo.
  • Productions filmed in Aberdeen has said city's name underneath the logo.
  • Sometimes, this logo also shares the screen with other logos.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: None or the ending theme of the programme.

Availability:

  • Seen on newer shows from this period including Impossible and Antiques Road Trip until series 20, game shows such as Catchpoint and Insert Name Here, and many other programmes.
  • Like before, most Comedy Unit co-produced shows use this logo including the last few series of Rab C. Nesbitt, the Still Game special "Still Game: The Story So Far", Limmy's Show, and Only an Excuse specials from 2009 to 2018.
  • The Aberdeen variant can be seen on Landward and Prawn Wars.

6th Logo (October 7, 2016-)


Visuals: Essentially, it is a print version of the previous logo with no animation.

Variant: Sometimes, this logo also shares the screen with other logos.

Technique: A still, digital graphic.

Audio: None or the ending theme of the programme.

Availability:

  • This logo can be seen on the last few series of Still Game, Only an Excuse 2019 and 2020, Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo specials, among many others.
  • It was also seen on the Hogmanay specials since 2019.

As a television channel

Logo (February 24, 2019-)

Visuals: A smooth "S" made of glass, stylized in the shape of Scotland, is seen standing on the ground of a varied setting. After a while, it begins filling up with coloured light (also varying between each ident), then empties. This cycle repeats throughout the whole ident.

Variant: Beginning on October 20, 2021, with the introduction of the BBC's new logo, the idents were altered a bit. The new BBC logo appears above, and the BBC Scotland logo is replaced with "SCOTLAND" in the BBC Reith font, like with the new BBC logo. The "Subtitles" graphic is now placed in a full widescreen picture, rather than being in its original place of a 4:3 picture.

Variant Trivia: This ID uses the Chameleon branding design.

Technique: A mix of live-action and CGI, produced at Once Were Farmers.

Audio: Real-life sounds, and a rising buzz as the light enters the "S".
