Action Synthese Studio

Background

Action Synthese was a French animation company founded in 1998. The company produced only one film, 2005's The Magic Roundabout. The film was generally positively received in the UK. However, the film was subjected to a major redoing in the US; the film was renamed Doogal, all of the actors were dubbed over (save for Ian McKellen and Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue, and even then the latter redubbed her lines in an American accent), and the script was amended to include pop-culture references. These reasons were why the film was a critical and commercial bomb in the US. The American failure of the film led the company to strictly only produce TV shows like the reboot of The Magic Roundabout (which only aired for a limited time on Netflix in America) since then and, seven years after Doogal was released, the company was subject to bankruptcy causing their planned films (a second Magic Roundabout film and an adaptation of The Wizard of Oz) to be cancelled. Even after the company went bankrupt, The Magic Roundabout was released to theaters in South Korea.

1st Logo (February 2, 2005-February 24, 2006)

Visuals: On a black background, The Magic Roundabout character Zebedee jumps into the screen, and looks to the left. He then jumps back a bit, and shoots the letters "ACTION SYNTHESE", in gold, out of his hands. He then rests his hand on the text and smiles at us. A line is drawn under the company name, and the word "STUDIO" fades in above "CTION". The logo shines a bit before fading out.

Trivia: In actuality, the company was supposed to be called 'Studio Action Synthese' which is why the word 'STUDIO' was on top and not the bottom, especially since French companies like StudioCanal would always have 'studio(s)' before the company name. This was even proven on the film's audio description track on the DVD where even the announcer pronounces the company name in a French accent.

Variants:

  • On the Korean dub of the film, the logos for BrunchMate Film Company and BridgeWorks Entertainment can be seen at the bottom fading in and out between.
  • On the 2006 U.S. redub Doogal, the logo as well as the rest of the film had an orange tint to it.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: The opening theme of the film, accompanied by rusty spring sounds and spark noises.

Audio Variant: On the French dub of the film, the sound effects were silenced.

Availability: Only seen on the 2005 version of The Magic Roundabout, and its infamous 2006 U.S. redub Doogal. The Korean variant is hard to find as it is only seen on the Korean theatrical and DVD release of the film, which can only be found on sites such as YesAsia and GMarket.

2nd Logo (October 22, 2007-2010)

Visuals: An in-credit logo depicting the last logo cropped to only the logo and placed in a box, removing Zebedee in the process. The logo is placed on the second-to-last shot of the closing credits, with other production logos (including EllipsAnime).

Technique: CGI converted into a photo.

Audio: The closing theme of the show.

Availability: Seen only on the 2007 television reboot of The Magic Roundabout.
