Background

Zagreb Film is a Croatian animation studio founded in 1953 by the Croatian Film Workers' Association. Their best-known cartoon is Professor Balthazar.

1st Logo (February 16-May 18, 1955)

Visuals: On a gray background, a stylized eye-like white shape is shown in the center. Aligned to the left is a round, black, vertical upside-down triangle containing "SCF" in white and a stacked format. Extra letters are added to the right, reading in full:

STUDIO ZA
CRTANI
FILM

On top and underneath the logo is the company name and "PRESENTS" in Croatian.

Technique: A still painting filmed by a camera.

Audio: A brass fanfare.

Availability: Seen on their earliest cartoons such as Djevojka i hrast and Jubilej gosp. Ikla.

2nd Logo (April 1, 1957-1971)

Visuals: A stylized, tall, and thin horse colored either white or black with red hair is shown underneath the company name in light blue and an arc. On top of it all is "Proizvodnja" and underneath the logo is "SCF" and "STUDIO ZA CRTANI FILM" in a stacked format. "EASTMANCOLOR" is positioned on the bottom center whereas Dubrava-Film and CFL's notices are shown on the left and right respectively. The most common appearance of this logo has it set to a black background.

Variants:

  • The background and text color may vary depending on the short.
    • One common variant of this is a gradient blue background.
  • An animated version consists of the horse zooming in, followed by the rest of the text fading in.
  • Sometimes, the Dubrava-Film and CFL logos are omitted.
  • "Studio Za Crtani Film" may be removed.
  • Zagreb Film's logo may be added in the in-credit section where they are credited for animation services.
  • Sometimes, the horse is in a black and white color scheme.
  • On some shorts, Jardan Film is credited in place of Dubrava-Film.
  • On Igra, "STUDIO ZA CRTANI FILM" is replaced with "Yugoslavia" spaced out and "color by" is added above "EASTMANCOLOR".
  • On Djevojka za sve, the text has a white outline.

Technique: None for most of the variants. Traditional animation for a few variants.

Audio: None or the opening theme of the film.

Availability: Seen on Cowboy Jimmy, Cow on the Moon, Erzatz, and Inspektor Maska. The animated version is found on Lažni kanarinac, Ring, and Na livadi.

Visuals: The horse from the normal variant is in a small size with the company name and Zagreb, both in Cooper Black, positioned underneath the image. Next to it is another studio's name, both of which are separated by an "&". On top of both of them is "COPRODUCTION".

Variants:

  • On Professor Balthazar, the logo resembles the white version of the normal variants but with just the company name and "SCF", both in white.
  • On Tolerancija, the company name is in blue and has a black outline.
  • On Klizi-puzi, the horse is below the company name.
  • On Ljubitelji cvijeća, "COPRODUCTION" was removed.

Technique: A still painting filmed by a camera.

Audio: The opening theme of the film.

Availability: It was used during the logo's later years from 1967 to 1971. The normal version of this variant was first seen on Tolerancija and was later seen on Idu dani and Klizi-puzi. The first two seasons of Professor Balthazar also had a co-production variant but is different among the rest. Although the company primarily used the next logo in 1971, it was shown on a few cartoons from that year such as Ljubitelji cvijeća and its last appearance, Mačka.

3rd Logo (1969-January 8, 1985)

Visuals: A shorter horse with a wider neck and thinner limbs (one of its arms are lifted up) is shown within a black tube shape. The company name is in Arial warped and aligned to the bottom left of the box. Over and underneath the logo are "proizvodnja produced by" and "SCF", the former of which is stacked.

Variants:

  • Like the previous logo, the background and text color may vary.
  • Sometimes, the logo is set to a white box and the horse is black.
  • The logo may also be in a light blue box and the text inside it is gold.
  • Sometimes, particularly in its later years, the logo has a white outline.
    • This variant may also have no fill.
  • Starting in 1979, "ALL RIGHTS RESERVED" and the company's copyright notice are added on the bottom left and right of the logo.
  • On Putnik 2. razreda, the company name in the logo is in Times New Roman.
  • The logo may be shown within the film's title card.
  • On Sreća, the text inside the logo is bolded and the outer text (excluding "SCF") is positioned underneath it with the "produced by" sections in orange and the company name in red and capitalization.
  • On Horvatov Izbor, the logo is in the blue background with the RTZ logo at the right of it.

Technique: A still painting filmed by a camera.

Audio: None or the opening theme of the film.

Availability: This variant was first used on Gallery, which was released a year after the logo's overall debut. It later appeared on the first three episodes of Ptica i crvek as well as Satiemania and Pogrebnik, Put k susjedu, among others. Its last appearance was on Horvatov Izbor.

Visuals: Same concept as the co-production variant of the previous logo but with the 1969 logo.

Variant: A color scheme variant has the logo in black and white.

Technique: A still painting filmed by a camera.

Audio: The opening theme of the film.

Availability: Like the co-production variant of the previous logo, it was more prominently used in the early 1970's despite not appearing as much as the normal variants. It debuted on Maska crvene smrti (the logo's overall debut) and was later seen on Čovjek koji je morao pjevati, Tup Tup, and Ars Gratia Artis. Seasons 3 and 4 of Professor Balthazar also had this variant.

4th Logo (February 22, 1982-)

Visuals: On a black background, a gold, less stylized version of the horse from before is shown zooming in. After it stops, the company name fades below, followed by the copyright notice and "All rights reserved" on the bottom left and right.

Variants:

  • A white version of the horse exists.
  • The earliest version has the horse shifted upwards to make room for "& KINEMATOGRAFI Zagreb" underneath the company name.
  • On Slike iz sjećanja, the text is lowered and the copyright information is in a serif font.
  • On Film s djevojčicom, the copyright year is removed, leaving just the company name and the copyright symbol.
  • On Wienner Blut, "proizvodnja production" is added above the logo. The only thing underneath the company name is the year in Roman numerals.
    • The ending to said film has the horse in blue and the copyright notice adds "Croatia" after the company name.
  • Beginning sometime in the 2010's, the horse is set to the same colour as Wienner Blut's closing variant and the company name is in a different font, specifically a modern-era typeface formatted as "ZAGREB FILM".

Technique: Traditional animation.

Audio: None.

Availability: It debuted on Jedan dan života and was seen on Tup Tup, episode 6 of Ptica i crvek, and Oncle Luka. Its most notable recent appearance was on Wienner Blut.
