Universal Studios Florida

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

1st Logo (1989-1993)

Visuals: Simply the Universal Studios Florida logo of the time. Text regarding the filming location is above.

Variants:

  • This logo appears in-credit on Orlando-based episodes of Super Sloppy Double Dare.
  • Swamp Thing has this logo against a black background.

Technique: A still computer graphic.

Audio: The closing theme of the show.

Availability: Can be seen on Swamp Thing on Me-TV. All reruns of Super Sloppy Double Dare episodes taped at Universal keep this logo intact.

2nd Logo (Late 1989?-March 28, 1991)

Visuals: On a black background, the text ‘UNIVERSAL STUDIOS’ scrolls past the camera, each letter displaying a clip from a movie or TV show, all related to an attraction within the theme park, including films like Jetsons: The Movie, Back to the Future and Jaws. Once the text has gone offscreen, the camera pulls back, revealing ‘UNIVERSAL STUDIOS’ again, this time in pink encased within a border designed to look like the marquee of a movie theatre, against a backdrop of structures silhouetted against an evening sky (most likely representing Hollywood, California) The word ‘Florida’ in cursive calligraphy writes itself on screen, all while searchlights scan the sky.

Variants:

  • Most commercials for the park cut the logo down to its last couple seconds (‘Florida’ writing itself on screen)
  • Several later commercials feature a reanimated version of the logo, now in CGI. The text now has more depth and the colors have been swapped (‘Universal Studios’ now in yellow and ‘Florida’ in pink). A reflection can also be seen below the Universal Studios part of the logo.

Technique: Mostly 2D animation, save for the movie clips which were mostly filmed in live action.

Audio: A dramatic orchestral piece that becomes majestic toward the end, starting with a loud orchestral wind up, followed by a lone trumpet which progressively is joined by the rest of the elements before a lighter section as the Universal logo pulls back and two flourishes as the logo forms. Chuck Riley recites ad copy throughout.

  • Late 1989: Riley's narration begins 20 seconds into the commercial. "Now, the people who have brought you the magic of Hollywood for over 75 years, want to bring it to you like no one else can. To take you inside the heart of a working motion picture and television studio. To watch real filmmaking in action. And share the secrets, the spectacle, the glamour that have made not only great entertainment, but entertainment history. Universal Studios Florida, premiering in Orlando, Spring 1990. It's the greatest Hollywood production ever."
  • Early 1990: "Beginning in May 1990, entertainment will never be the same. That's when you'll play a starring role in an awesome array of attractions, based on the greatest motion pictures in Hollywood history. Whether you're soaring through the sky with E.T., rocketing at the speed of light in Back to the Future, or facing the howling, growling fury of King Kong, for the first time you will feel what it's like to...ride the movies. This is Universal Studios Florida, the only studio with 75 years of great moviemaking experience behind it. The only studio that will take your imagination and hold it captive for days on end. Universal Studios Florida, premiering in Orlando, May 1990. Come see the stars, and ride the movies."
  • 1990-91: "Now, the people who brought you the greatest movies of all time have brought those movies to life. Now you can live them. You'll face the frenzied attack of Jaws. The colossal fury of King Kong. You'll feel the mind-boggling power of an 8.3 earthquake. The spirit-soaring flight across the sky with E.T. You join the Ghostbusters and much much more. Now you play a part in all the glamour, spectacle and adventure of a real working motion picture and television studio. This, is no theme park; it's Universal Studios Florida. It's open now in Orlando, and it's the only place on Earth where you can see the stars, and ride the movies."'

Availability: Can be seen on all MCA/Universal Home Video VHS tapes from at least late 1989 through 1991. It also appeared on some Hanna-Barbera Home Video tapes in 1990 (usually following a promo for The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera). The last tape to have it was White Palace.

3rd Logo (1998-2002)

Visuals: Same as the Universal Studios Theme Parks logo, but "THEME PARKS" is replaced with "FLORIDA".

Technique: Same as the Universal Studios Theme Parks logo.

Audio: Either the music of the commercial or none.
