Universal Records

Background

Universal Records was founded in 1977 as WEA Records Philippines Inc. The company was the licensee of WEA in the Philippines for 15 years, but the latter still decided to put its own office, the precursor of what is now Warner Music Philippines.

1st Logo (1995-2000s)

Visuals: In an outer space background, the planet Earth flies in from the bottom left corner of the screen while rotating. While this happens, a large chunk of metal/stone flies in while flipping vertically. Afterwards, another piece from the left corner of the first chunk emerges and attaches itself to the first chunk to form a large U. After they attach, the background suddenly turns white and the U turns blue along with the globe and has a registered trademark symbol (®) on its side. The word "UNIVERSAL" appears letter by letter (a la the 4th PolyGram Video logo) and "RECORDS" slides up from the bottom of the screen.

Variant: A filmed version appears in Sige... i hataw Mo!.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: An orchestrated MIDI-like fanfare.

Availability: Can be seen in the company's videoke (karaoke on video) VCDs. The filmed version is seen only in Sige... I-hataw Mo!, the label's only motion picture film (distributed by Megavision Films).

2nd Logo (2000s)

Visuals: On a white/blue gradient background, the Universal Records logo can be seen at the top, as well as the company's address, telephone and fax numbers, website, and e-mail info below.

Technique: A still digital graphic.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen following the 1st and next logos in later releases by the company.

3rd Logo (2000s)

Visuals: Red curtains start off the logo. The curtains open, revealing a stage with red/blue/white lights, a videoke machine, a disco ball, a microphone, and a stool chair. A character based on the "u" of the Universal Records logo walks into the stage and grabs the microphone, and tests it. The character also tweaks with the videoke TV before grabbing the microphone again and sitting on the chair. Meanwhile, the character touches the disco ball, which moves and hits the character's back, making the "u" character touch his head in discomfort. The curtains close, before the logo fades into black.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A music box theme is heard in the background, with a wiping sound when the curtains open, walking sounds, microphone test noises, two high guitar notes, a cartoonish hitting sound, descending synth sounds, a quick white noise effect, and a 3-note ding after the curtains close.

Availability: Seen on Universal's children's music videoke discs.
