Background

The Landscape Channel (Later known as simply Landscape and Landscape HD) was a British television network that showcased ambient videos set to various instrumental tracks or classical music.

Landscape initially ran as a late-night filler service on Sky Channel from 1988, and in 1989 after leaving Sky, they signed a deal with Channel 4 to broadcast its content in early mornings under a programme titled The Art of Landscape. After this run, Landscape launched on cable television as a standalone channel in 1991 before it expanded into Europe on the Eutelsat 13 satelite in 1994.

By the late 1990s, the channel's funding was decreased and saw major cuts to save money, including being removed from television in most territories including the UK. By 2001, Landscape was only airing on cable television in the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. 2001 also saw the channel's management move Landscape to internet-based servers, which could allow third-parties to broadcast Landscape's programming under their own name. In 2003, the channel returned to the UK as a block on the controversial network Friendly TV.

In 2007, Landscape became known as Landscape HD as it began showcasing its content in 1080p HD. It was relaunched again on UK television in 2010 when it was added to Information TV's schedule. From 2014, the channel's presence from the public eye became scarce. The channel's internet streams were shut down in 2020 and their YouTube channel soon followed.

1st ID (1988-2001)

Visuals: On a blue watercolour background, we see reflections of fish and a bird from the rippling water. The camera pans over to the landscape of the sea, with a rising sun in the middle and clouds in the sky. The text "THE LANDSCAPE CHANNEL", with a large "LANDSCAPE" and "THE" and "CHANNEL" in a spaced-out bold font on top and bottom of it, zooms into view as the clouds zoom out. As a bird in the sky flies near the sun, the logo slowly zooms out until we only see the landscape view until the ident fades out.

Variants:

  • For The Art of Landscape programme, the text was replaced with the respective name, and the ident fades out before the text would normally do.
  • By the 1990s, the text was replaced with simply LANDSCAPE in a bolder font.

Technique: Cel-animation.

Audio: A calming "hmmmmmmmm" sound.

2nd ID (2001-mid/late 2000s)

Visuals: The sequence starts at the landscape view from before, but this time a large sword rises out of the water, while the words "Quality", "Beauty" and "Vision" rise out as well. Then, the Landscape logo from before zooms onto the screen, with the white slogan "The Relaxation Network" and the URL "landscapetv.com" below in a white narrow font.

Variant: There is a variant with German text, used on the German version of the channel.

Technique: CGI animation.

Audio: Same as the previous ident.
