Background
This was the white-oriented television channel of the apartheid-era South African Broadcasting Corporation. It broadcasted in both Afrikaans and English and aired both local and imported shows (mostly from the United States). A majority of the imported content was dubbed into Afrikaans, while the original English audio track aired on Radio 2000 beginning in 1986. In early 1996, SABC restructured its television channels, creating SABC 1, while renaming this channel to "SABC 2".
1st ID (1981-1987)
Visuals: There is a gold 3D map of South Africa that zooms in and turns to the left. It shines, then copies of the map trail to the top-right corner, where it eventually moves offscreen. Then, "TV", which is written with an orange outline and a blue backlight, flips up from the bottom, then "1" zooms out next to the letters via a trailing effect. The number slightly turns to face the right, turning it 3D, then the top right corner of the 1 shines a blue light.
Technique: Modeling effects and video feedback.
Audio: A synth-disco jingle.
2nd ID (1987-1991)
Visuals: The logo starts with 1, V then T in yellow, red and blue respectively appear and spin across the screen, leaving a trail behind it. As they head towards the center, the y start to become less blurry and the characters start to turn whilst the 1 increases in size. The V continues to turn as the crossbar of the T disappears as both the letters place themselves under the left side of the 1. As this happens, a blue line at the top side of the 1 fades blue over the T line to form said letter.
Variants:
- There is a still version of this logo.
- Sometimes the appearance or perspective of the logo is different.
Technique: Scanimate and early CGI.
Audio: A droning synth theme that transitions into a synth-pop tune. An announcer may also be heard.
3rd ID (1991-1993)
Visuals: Over an underwater sandy background, there are two small lines 9(hich appear as one) pan towards the bottom left corner of the screen as various curves and lines at the bottom right corner draw themselves in. The shapes pan outward towards the left as the aforementioned two lines stop at a comfortable spot and move along with the larger shape. Parts of said shape then in a low opacity fly away towards the center of the screen with the laft, right, top and bottom curves being blue, red, yellow and green respectively. After the shape's opacity increases at maximum, a blue italic 1 appears inside the shape before the logo shines and the 1 casts a shadow. Throughout the logo, the background consists of lines, flowers, a water drop, a countdown screen, Thalia and Melpomene, a waving flag and a 1 in a circle.
Technique: CGI.
Audio: A jazz/R&B theme with a whoosh as the shadow appears.
