Background

The next in the line of Sony's PlayStation consoles, the PlayStation 3 was released in Japan on November 11, 2006, in North America on November 17, 2006, and in Europe and Australia on March 16, 2007. The console was fully discontinued on May 29, 2017.

1st Logo (November 11, 2006-September 1, 2009)

Visuals: Against a black background is the text "PLAYSTATION 3" in the same font used in the Spider-Man films, appear and then disappear quickly.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: A single synth chime sound.

Audio Trivia: The PlayStation 20th Anniversary SHAREfactory theme has the chime sound on a title, which shows the Users tab of the XMB, as shown on the next logo, with the signed-in profile "SHAREfactory", which slides in to a rectangle, which shows the video title and PSN ID, as with other title videos.

Availability:

  • Appears when you start up a PS3 game, after the fifth SCE logo. As with the PSP, if there's more than one game on the XMB, it'll only appear after you select a game.
  • Since the release of System Software 3.00 and the introduction of the new PS3 logo, this no longer appears when you start a PS3 game. This startup screen can be found on PS3 models that were shipped with firmware versions below System Software 3.00 (if they're not updated to the latest firmware version), which includes all of the Phat models until to the release of the PS3 Slim model CECH-20xxB in September of 2009. Finding a model with firmware versions prior to System Software 3.00 can be difficult, as those models have a notoriety for its reliability issues (such as the yellow light of death, caused by manufacturing faults in the RSX GPU and its high usage of heat). Consider yourself lucky should you happen to find or own a Phat or an early Slim model (up until CECH-20xxB) of the console that still works and haven't been updated for a long time.

2nd Logo (September 1, 2009-)

Visuals: Same as the 5th Sony Computer Entertainment logo, except "Sony Computer Entertainment" has been replaced by the PlayStation Family logo, "PS3," and the text "PlayStation 3" below it. It's followed by a health warning.

Visuals Trivia:

  • On Astro's Playroom, the background at the end of the Cooly Springs world changes at a slightly faster rate, with the XMB icons shown behind Asobi when landing on the ground.
  • The PlayStation 20th Anniversary SHAREfactory theme featured the console's startup on an intro, which is shown on a widescreen TV with a darts board and a calendar, which shows November 2006 the release date of the console being circled on the 11th. As soon as the XMB is shown (with the date set to November 11th and the time set to 7AM, background color set to light-blue (August) instead of russet (November), which most likely resembles PlayStation's image color), it zooms in to reveal the PlayStation 20th Anniversary logo.

Variants: For its release in pre-2009, the background is colored purple. Starting in 2009, the background is colored blue. The color depends on the month, as it changes its brightness slowly, depending on the current time. Furthermore, each day changes the color's hue.

Technique: Computer animation.

Audio: Same as the 5th Sony Computer Entertainment logo, but slightly different.

Audio Trivia:

  • On Astro's Playroom, the startup sound plays at the end of the Cooly Springs world, in which Asobi poses then lands on the ground, with pools surrounding in front of him. It was also extended by Kenneth C. M. Young, as an ambient beat plays. The startup sound can also be heard when turning on the PS3 Slim and Super Slim consoles in the PlayStation Labo, when obtained.
  • The PlayStation 20th Anniversary SHAREfactory theme has the startup sound on a title, which shows the same screen as shown on the previous logo.

Availability: Appears when you turn on a PlayStation 3 running on system software version 3.00 or above. This startup screen can be found on PS3 models that were shipped with firmware versions 3.00 and above, starting from the PS3 Slim CECH-21xxA until to the Super Slim CECH-43xxC.
