Background

Pearl River Film Company was a Chinese film production company from the late 1950s to 2000. It was originally founded as Zhujiang Film Company in 1956, before being renamed into Pearl River Film Studio in 1958. Until the 1970s, Pearl River produced its historical and war films, but in the 1990s, it started to make comedic/drama films. In 1978, the Pearl River Film Studio name was reinstated, but it was renamed into Pearl River Film Company. In the early 2000s, Pearl River Film Company closed, and has been folded into the Pearl River Film Group.

1st Logo (1962)

Visuals: There is the Pearl River Delta background, but it looks embossed. The text "Pearl River Film Studio" in Chinese with text shadow mode.

Variant: There is a another variant where the text in Chinese is carved over the marble background.

Technique: A still printed image.

Audio: The opening theme of the film.

Availability: Only seen on Nanhai Tide.

2nd Logo (1970s-1980)

Visuals: On the evening beach background is the statue on a path. Like before, the text "Pearl River Film Studio in red Chinese font.

Variants:

  • A black and white or purple-tinted version exists.
  • A early variant has it slightly blue-tinted and had the text more down.

Technique: A still printed image.

Audio: The opening theme of the film.

Audio Variant: A early variant had a dramatic fanfare.

Availability: Seen on some Pearl River films from 1970s to the early 1980s.

3rd Logo (1979?-2000)


Visuals: On a red/dark red background, there is a text "Pearl River Film Studio" in gold Chinese font.

Variants:

  • A CinemaScope version exists.
  • A wood background version with white text exists.
  • The size and the positioning of the logo may vary.
  • From 1986 to 2000, the logo's name was changed into "Pearl River Film Company".
  • A in-credit version has been spotted.

Technique: A still printed image.

Audio: The opening theme of the film or none.

Availability: Seen on Pearl River films from 1980 to 2000. Was spotted on some movies like Robber in Baling, Anti-Gunshot Action, Drumming in Blackwood, Call of the Home Village and The Filmmakers. This logo was last seen on Goddess in War Times, which can be found on YouTube.

4th Logo (1989)

Visuals: On a space background, two lines form Chinese text. The words "PEARL RIVER FILM COMPANY" and "SIL-METROPOLE ORGANISATION LTD." appear. The Chinese word for "presents" in yellow appears.

Variant: The Mainland version features a still Chinese text "Pearl River Film Company and Sil-Metropole Organisation Ltd. co-present" in white fades in on a blue background. Then the text disappears.

Technique: 2D cel animation.

Audio: A gong sound followed by a somewhat majestic fanfare.

Availability: Only appeared on The Empress Dowager.

5th Logo (1996?)

Visuals: On a blue background, there is a text "Pearl River Film Studio" in white Chinese font. Below them, there is a supporting company in Chinese text.

Technique: A still printed image.

Audio: None.

Availability: Only seen on Guangzhou Warrior.
