Background

Humphrey Barclay Productions was formed by Humphrey Barclay, who left London Weekend Television in 1983 to form said company. They produced sitcoms such as Hot Metal, Surgical Spirit, and Desmond's. Barclay would return to LWT in 1996.

Logo (January 5, 1989-September 26, 1996)

Visuals: On a black background, a turquoise scribble path is drawn from the top left to bottom right, forming a mostly filled in box. Afterwards, a brown and white sketch of a happy cartoon bear with a furry outline pops within the centre of the box alongside "Humphrey Barclay Productions", its co-producer's name, and the copyright notice in a gold Dom Casual font underneath.

Variants:

  • There is a later variant where the bottom text portion is altered. Two horizontal lines coloured brown and turquoise are placed over and underneath the same set of text but in a capitalized font.
    • This variant would be set on a white background in its last few years.
  • On Porkpie, the title character's hat falls from the top, leaving a yellow path along the way, and lands on the bear's right ear.
  • On the Desmond's episode "O Little Town Of Peckham", a Christmas-themed variant is used where the bear is wearing Santa's hat on its left ear.
  • On Up the Garden Path, the only text present is the company name in a regular font.
  • On Agony Again, this logo shares the screen with the 1988 BBC logo.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: A pencil scribble sound effect, followed by a high-pitched chime note.

Audio Variants:

  • Sometimes, the ending theme of the programme may play over.
  • On Porkpie, the title character utters a line similar to "He hu-muh!" while the logo forms.
  • On the Desmond's episode "Judgment Day", a loud and hard laughter is heard for the logo's formation.
  • On the Desmond's episode "O Little Town Of Peckham", the Christmas-themed variant has Santa laughing in a fairly goofy fashion.

Availability:

  • Seen on Desmond's, Porkpie and Agony Again, among many other programmes at the time.
  • They are intact on television airings old and new as well as on streaming services such as Tubi.
