Perhaps we should get rid of the nicknames on descriptions. It's just a bunch of low-quality filler. A lot of in-jokes. It's not encyclopedic material. Only a few nicknames have any regular use in discourse outside of the wiki.

The last 2 New Line Cinema logo descriptions each have 17 different nicknames. That's beyond excessive.

You know what I'm very much in favor of this. We should only keep nicknames that are common community discourse like V of Doom, S from Hell, Splaat, etc.

agreed, i have legit never seen a singular person that has called the 20th Century Studios logo the "Disney Tower" lol

Yeah, might as well do it. Another reason I can think of is that some of them are based on information that has since been removed, and are thus outdated.

If consensus is for it, I'm not opposed.

I definitely think nicknames now are not necessary. IMO it's a reflection of the old Scare Factors. I brought this issue up before in an old thread:

I've seen a lot of logos here have too many nicknames, most of them are wordy, redundant, or too specific, and I doubt anyone but the writer used the nicknames anyway. A while ago I removed a nickname from the Bum Motion Pictures (South Korea) page that referenced bum as in butt, even though it wouldn't make any sense in a South Korean context anyway.

But now that I think of it, you're right Shakla, nicknames are not encyclopedic material. No one calls the 2002 Paramount logo "Ultra Majestic Mountain" nor "Perumount the Fourth". They call it "the 2002 Paramount logo" or "the old Paramount logo". They're unnecessary and most of them names only the writer use (or made up).

Of course there are logos with legitimate nicknames, such as Screen Gems, Viacom and Columbia's sunburst, but they can just go in the Editor's Notes.

Here, for example, were the original nicknames for Universal's current logo before I fixed them up. Even after I removed many of them, I still think they're kind of redundant.

"CGI Globe III", "100th Anniversary Globe", "Rotating Letters IV", "Majestic Globe", "100 Years of Universal", "Comcast Globe", "Centennial Globe", "Earth Globe VII", "Globes Through the Ages II", "Anniversary Globe II", "Happy Anniversary, Universal! II", "Universal's 100th", "Happy 100th, Universal!", "Century Globe", "Comcast Globe"

I'm personally not bothered with simple and straightforward nicknames. The only problem is when a logo has too many nicknames or the nickname is lenghty or subjective. A maximum of 6 nicknames, I'd say.

In agreement that we should cut down on the really unnecessary and excessive nicknames. Boje Buck comes to mind as a huge mess.

Definitely agree. Aside from a few infamous logos, NO ONE uses them in logo conversations. They are unnecessary, and many are quite frankly cringey.

You know, the more I clean up pages, the more I feel most nicknames that aren't commonly used are mostly unnecessary, and it doesn't help that some of them are pretty bare-bones.

I am at a disagreement with this one, I think about nicknames are useful because my name is private to me. If you want to, you can give me a preferred name. Don't like to be called by William, my name is not actually, Rodney, I used a random name generator., and that's the first thing that came up. I preferred to be just called Rodney.

RodneySystems2007, this thread is about logo nicknames on the pages, not usernames. Note that I commented here ages ago. Not only is my real name clearly not AlmightyKingPrawn, but I'm actually a girl.

We do need to. It doesn't add anything useful for the page, as many are just redundantly redundant, and they're basically remains of all that silliness the Scary and Cheesy Factors have infected. After all, as some are saying here, ppl don't refer to idents (most, at least) by these "nicknames" anymore. They just say "[company goes here] logo" and that's it.

Those Factors are basically just comedic reliefs to pages.

I know I am amazingly late to the party but I think we should keep at least one nickname for simplicity's sake. Maybe two at the VERY most. I don't want to see tens of nicknames that nobody ever uses (ESPECIALLY those "happy anniversary" nicknames, nobody says that and you know it).

Like obviously we're gonna keep the big famous nicknames like "V of Doom" and "S from Hell", these are so engraved into the community it would be wrong to remove them. But for any other pointless nicknames I am 100% fine with their removal because let's be honest, nobody calls the 2011 Paramount logo "Perumount V" and I will immediately question anyone who does

I have to agree. The ""Nicknames""™ are just unfunny annoying clowns. I haven't been on a single big page (except for Investigation Discovery, which is done by me), where at least half of the Nicknames look like they came from a random word generator. Here's the best result using a 48-word Fake Word Generatorː

"preoriandy"

Also, here's one of the words that looks like the nicknamesː

"meogongsterthq"

Also, some troll got into one of my pages & put in one nickname that looks like "I saw that logo from Animal Crossing". That's already putting up why nicknames are a waste. And I know, it shows the logo, but that's what it's there for; to tell me it's first appearance. Not to tell me it ain't good. And to top it all off, no one even considers the logos the nicknames. Like what NewAccountLOL said, no one called the 2020 TCF logo "Disney Tower". Now here's a collection of these I put upː

1. No one calls the 1965-1984 20th Century Fox Television the "Slanted Tower" unless they needed to.

2. The Nicknames for the 2nd Lucasfilm Ltd. logo is useless, since there would be another logo using it.

3. "Still the One" used for the 3rd logo of ABC Circle Films would already be mentioned in the National IDs

4. The Mondadori Video Nickname is just stupid.

Just like that one nickname from Justin Roiland's vanity card which was "the logo at the end of Rick and Morty".

I support this. I've longed to see a thread like this. There's no purpose for nicknames if we're being honest here.

Plus, those "(company)'s (country)nese cousin/brother" nicknames make no sense.

I personally thought it was something fun on the pages. Although I do admit that it's something that got ruined by people getting overzealous (something that happens quite a bit here). Although I will admit everyone has good points. So if they stay or go, I don't really care. Although I do agree; keep the "S from Hell" or "V of Doom" and maybe a few others. Like the Dolby trailers for example, as most of them do have official nicknames. But either way, I don't care what happens with them

I'd say we should only keep official nicknames (and notable nicknames like VoD obviously). Besides Dolby, most TV idents have real nicknames/slogans too for each campaign so I think we should also keep that. But for the others (especially those "X Logo's Scarier Indian Brother" nicknames), and those excessive anniversary-related nicknames, I think they should go.

I commented here ages ago when it got strangely mostly ignored, but reaffirming my position that with the exception of the famous ones ("S from Hell", "V of Doom", etc), official ones (for THX, Dolby, Best Brains and Alternaversal as they are also called "stingers" by the MST3K fandom in addition to us and named a trope on TV Tropes, what I discovered for Rainbow SpA and Filmnation, and many others) and perhaps the straightforward ones that are [what the logo is] {number}, as in like "Majestic Mountain II, we can really get rid of most of the Nicknames. Especially the "cousin" ones and the attempts at "From Hell" and "Of Doom" Nicknames that aren't as famous as the original ones.

V of Doom, a term so famous one of the admins in the original wiki was named after it.

I think that there are so few nicknames of any actual value that we can ditch the section altogether and just place notable nicks in the editor's Note section.

I'm okay with nicknames going. Yes, there are obvious well-known ones like the "S from Hell" and "V of Doom" but I swear, 99% of nicknames on pages are either "The [object]" or something like "The Personification of All That is [x]" or things that aren't even nicknames, just outright statements like "The Creepy Logo That I Saw On a 'Scary Indian Logo' Compilation Video" (I made this one up but it probably actually exists somewhere).

It's Official, Only 4 nicknames at a time, Historical nicknames (like V of Doom) are kept, and Any nickname that has "[Logo] [Country/Scariness] [Brother/Sister]" should be removed immediately.
